I just took a really good look at the inside of the engine compartment and noticed that it looks like it was never painted but only primed. I have a Silver sky color but the engine compartment is Primer Grey. Has anyone else noticed this or did Toyota forget to paint mine?
Modern paint practices usually call for some kind of corrosion protection coating, then primer, then the base coat color, then the clear coat...To save money, most auto manufacturers only paint the inside of the hood and such with only the base coat...No clear coat could make the silver inside the hood appear like primer grey...If you think you can do a reasonable job yourself, go get some clear coat at the auto parts store, and paint a small inconspicuous spot first...I like laquer for my quick clear coat jobs like this...Some swear by enamel...Personal preference...Call a local auto body shop if you want...Of course, there is always the possibility that they did indeed fail to paint your base coat over the primer...I doubt that though with the automation processes at the factory...Hope that helps...DP
I understand what you are saying. But , my Sequoia definitely has a grey engine compartment. It's not even metalic like the outside of the car. I can see where teh Sliver Sky ends and the grey begin.

I'd inquire into this with your dealer....I've yet to see that type of interior engine compartment paint job on any Sequoia I've looked at......and thats been quite a few.

My engine compartment is primer gray also, not Thunder Gray. I'll have to ask the dealer next weekend when I am there.
I was at the dealer today to get my spoiler installed. The body shop said that it's normal. They only basecoat the engine compartment and underside of the hood. What a way for Toyota to cut costs. I wonder how other colors look inside.
I am absolutely sure that the paint inside my2001 SR5 engine compartment is the same as the body , i.e. it is the same metalic paint as the outside. The only difference is that it does not have the clear coat. Defenitely not a primer or another paint.
I also noticed on my 2002 Thunder Gray SR5 that the areas of the tailgate which are not visible when closed have no clear coat -- it just has a silver matt metallic paint finish.
I assume this is intentional and is part of Toyota's "Lean Manufacturing" philosophy.
what you have is the way it is. Just a colored primer (not even any metallic). Lift your hood up and look at the fender just as it falls into the E.C. there should be some difference.
