    Default 2001 Sequoia Transmission Issue

I have a 2001 Sequoia with 104K miles and just started making a humming noise when the Over Drive is engaged. Another member of TS had the humming then it became a grinding noise and eventually needed a new transmission.

I would really appreciate any advices on what I can do to save my transmission if it is possible:cry: . I was going to make an appointment at my dealership, but they charge 90 dollars just to sit on the passenger seat with me in a test drive and then advice me on what to do.

    Thanks in advance.

I think I'd have it looked at......

Perhaps you could spend the $90 and have an independent (trusted) shop pull the pan and check/change the fluid.......if they discover a bunch of metal shavings or other signs of catastrophic failure, then you'll know.

I would recommend taking it to a Tranny shop you trust (or someone you know that trusts one) and have a rebuild if necessary, at the least a thorough checkup done on it. A rebuild is far cheaper than having to get a whole new tranny. My sisters Tahoe tranny just went out (completely fried, no driveability at all) final cost $1,700.00. I have had tranny's redone for less than half that cost.

Thanks for the advice Jettix2 and Merlinium, I will be doing what you are suggesting. I have been driving for 3 week and apparently the humming somtimes goes away, but other times can be heard. Other than that it shift well and with no problem. I need to resolve this problem since I will be traveling to Mexico in December (5000 miles both ways) and will not want to have any problems on the road.

My friends 2001 Suburbans Trans went out at 90K and he got a rebuilt trans for $1400.00 and was charged $300.00 to install.

    Thanks again for the advice

Let us know what the diagnosis is......as someone else said, an independet (but trusted) transmission shop may be a LOT cheaper than the Toyota dealer

Mine "rumbles" at higher highway speeds. Maybe yours is speed related and not just being in the OD?

At any rate, Toyota of course said this was a "feature not a bug", won't touch it. I can control it to some degree by using slightly different differential oil weights between seasons.

I have found out that the humming noise goes away at highway speeds of 65 and over. I turn the OD off and no difference only change is the revolutions go up.

It is more noticible at speeds of 35 to 50 mph with the OD engaged. At these speeds I can turn the OD off and the revolutions go slightly higher and the humming goes away.

I am starting to think that the trans only makes this humming sound when cruising and the revolutions are between 1300 and 1600 rpm. But then I get confused because while driving in town with OD off there is never a humming when driving at the above revolutions (I will pay more attention to this).

I am still asking my friends for a dependable trans shop that will do a good diagnostic test and that will not try to rip me off.

I will be going with my brother one of these days and lift and secure the rear end, then I will run the tires to different speeds and listen more closely to the transmission. This way there will be no road noise. I am not sure this will work due to the traction and stability controls. Hope it will work.

    Thanks

My wife's '02 with 105k has similar noise, but I think it is power steering because the noise is heard at idle, also. It goes away when the steering wheel is wiggled back and forth, which I never would do on the road. Perhaps a power steering flush is in order? Dunno
