Default Replacement keys and programming

Just an FYI. Due to a purse being stolen, I went through the trouble of getting new master keys and programming them. The keys from ebay work fine, you just have to make sure and get the correct one for your model.

A WORD of ADVICE: I had more trouble getting the keys cut than anything else. I would recommend getting a simple $2 key blank made of a master key before your keys wear down any more. Over time, the keys get worn and the locks tend to "adjust" a little bit to the key. Putting a freshly cut key in has to realign the locks slightly. Anyway, if you have a cheap key that is cut correctly then you can use it as a master to cut any transponder keys you may have to get down the road.

The programming is easy, it is just a bunch of pedal pushing and inserting keys and waiting for timeouts, etc.

You can get a key off ebay for about $20-$25. Much better than $70 at the dealer. And, yes it is true, if you lose all your master keys (black ones), then you will have to buy a new ECM computer for about $1500 and then program new keys into it. The new ECMs come in auto key program mode, but once there have been some master keys entered, you have to use one to program any more keys. You can program 7 simultaneous masters and then a subkey.

I would also recommend to go ahead and buy an extra transponder key (from ebay or dealer) that you can put away as a master that never gets used. You can use this master to program later. Also, don't keep your working keys in the same place even for a short time.

I'm going to get on it...however, all models 2004 and newer have to buy the keys from the dealer...they're "dealer restricted." I emailed a vendor on ebay about compatibility with my 2004 and that's what they told me. If you find an ebay'r that says they'll work in your 04/05/06, I'd be skeptical.

Unless someone with a newer model tells me otherwise, I'll assume it is true that they're dealer restricted.

There is one OEM Toyota key that I saw with part # 89785 - 17020. I'm not sure what models it covers though. Good luck to you. Your experience will make a good post. I look forward to reading it.

A friend of mine lost his keys a month ago, service guys made him really unhappy about the price, so they simply decided to just disable the whole immobiliser system somehow. Now his seq starts with regular cheap cut key. They say it's very easy and they do it every time when installing a remote start up system for cold weather

I just bought a 2001 Seqoia and I'm trying to program an extra master key for my wife. Would you send me the master key programming method?

I tried a method posted at Geocities, but it's not working.

I don't have my manual with me, but this was on ebay. It should work. It is what I remember. Let me know if it doesn't.

1. Place an already programmed Master key in the keyway. (Do not turn on.)

2. Press the Gas pedal 5 times.

3. Press the Brake pedal 6 times.

4. Pull out the key.

5. Insert the new key and DO NOT turn it on.

6. Press Gas pedal just 1 time and wait until security light stops blinking, (about a minute.)

7. Remove the key and Press Brake pedal 1 time. The cycle is now closed.

The programming mode will end after 10 more seconds.

My master key has become worn down. However my valet key is brand new. Can I cut a new master key from the valet key and program the new key using the master while the master is still functional?

The valet key will not open the glove box, back door or the passengers door. It is keyed only to get in through the drivers door and for the ignition. You also have to have to use a master key to program with.

Just an FYI that you can buy the key and get it cut for around $70 at the dealer. The cut is very precise because they cut according to vin #. They do not copy another key. Once you have that you can use the programming instructions that came with the key you bought on ebay or you can find the instructions elsewhere on the web. My word of advise is do not have anybody cut this key except the dealer. It can be ruined very easily when somebody else is cutting it. By the way you need one existing master key to program the new key. If you loose your master key you have to get the whole car re-keyed and I think that will cost around $500. So if you are down to one master key like I was take the above action and make another key to avoid the costly repair. The key you make will be another master key.
