1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "Need Help with my MPG", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Forgot to mention it, but I too have cleaned the MAF sensor. I even took the liberty and clean the throtle body today. Been doing a lot of research to see if there is any feasible solution to gain better gas mileage. Anywho, we'll see how it goes. It's really depressing having to fill up every 3 days at $3.52 (87 octane)! I'm even considering increasing the tire pressure to 40 psi. Between me, my wife, and my kid, our combined weight is 330 lbs., so I don't think weight is a factor. I thought about removing the seats, but I use those seats on the weekend taking my parents out to dinner. My 2002 Mercedes C320 is not getting that great gas mileage either with only 16 mpg overall. I just sold my 2004 Porsche Boxster S that was also getting 16 mpg. I really like the Sequoia, but the gas is killing me!!!
Re:uping this..cause my wifes trips to the mall are killing me...Any one have a problem w/ the over head ALWAYS READING 16.8 ..Our has never changed last 40kmiles We recently did a trip in ten days 3500 miles up hill down hill mostly cruising 80 ish got a consistent 14-15 mpg 02 4wd all stock.. im doing 1600-1800 miles next week w/ the new 3.5'' lift and 285/70/17s im a maintainence god!! and modify the crap out of everything i own...but havn't done crap to this till now...any one have any input on the headers,intake,exaust..as far as power and mpg inprovement...iwas goint to put a custom built exaust cat back....flowmaster dual in single 3 out sytem on it...This is my first 4.7 And im not impressed.. my stock s/c'ed taco hands it its ***....does any one have any input on the supercharger as far as mpg on the sequioa?????? havn;t seen much talk on it here!!!
At one point, I was getting 19 - yes 19 - mpg on my Sequoia when it had about 75k miles going 75mph with AC on, in a 4wd. I calculated this myself. Between larger tires, more wear and tear, and possibly not having changed the air filter in about 20k miles, I am not getting about 16 mpg. It's not terrible I guess - i took a road trip in my 01 Sequoia and a friend's 01 Tahoe. I had gear on my roof, and was carrying more cargo and passengers, and my Sequoia out-lasted him tank for tank about 50 miles every time.

Try Seafoam. A $7 bottle of cleaner took my Jeep Grand Cherokee from about 12 mpg to 15 mpg. I took off a vacuum line and introduced it through that. It will sputter out and smoke like crazy for about 10 minutes but wow it makes a difference.
The computer on our '05 SR5 4x4 has been stuck on 14.1 for so long I don't think it will ever change.
The best mileage I have seen in 16.75 mpg on the recent, all highway trip at 75-80 MPH.
I was at Costco this past weekend and decided to top off the tank since their gas was $3.09 and most other stations around are $3.25. I checked the mileage (all city) and it was 11.4 MPG for that 1/2 tank of gas....ouch!

just reset your MPG computer, and see it for 1 week how it goes.
(when you go to MPG, hold to outside buttons for like 20 seconds, and it will reset your computer)

There is a good chance it's the "gas".
Using Ethanol blend, E10, will loose at least 2mpg.
Using E85 and it will be close to a 25% loss (5 mpg) and you will destroy your engine.
If the MAF was not cleaned correctly it may be bad now.
Last night I was taking my kids back to their home and once I got onto the freeway, cruise at 65 mph, I reset the coimputer. About 15 miles later the avg mpg was 24??? Ont the return trip I did the same thing and I got 23.9. This seems quite high to me, although I won't complain. Is the computers calculations off?
I did switch over to synthetic......

Reason: Forgotten info
I got 13.1 mpg towing a Supra on a steel trailer from Iowa back home to WI.

Only things not stock are a K&N filter and load range E tires 265-75-16 at 50 psi front and 60 psi rear.
I typically get 19 to 20 mpg on interstate or state highways, either unloaded or with a load in the bed. I stay at the posted speed limit and use cruise control anytime possible.
I get 15 in short (4 to 10 miles) trips to and from town, but I drive mostly highway miles.
Towing a small travel trailer I get between 10 and 13 depending on the wind speed and direction.
I have a Shell gas card, so use it to get the 5% off the pump price. I rarely use discount station gas. I use synthetic engine oil and change it and the filter at 10,000 miles.
To get maximum value from this thread, it would be good to know 4WD vs. 2WD and stock rims vs. bling rims. Many say that you will lose 10-15% mpg for 4X4 and another 10-15% for the big tires like you usually see on 20" rims. So from hwy mileage of 20mpg, it's not shocking to lose 2 or 3 mpg for 4WD and another 2 or 3 mpg for the bling rims and the tires that go with them.
Made a trip once from near Marion NC to Clinton TN and got 25 MPG in my 2000 V8 4WD Tundra. Now that Tundra was excellent on gas and often nudged 20 MPG or more on trips, but the point of the 25 MPG run (Best Ever)is it was mostly DOWNHILL, which obviously helped a lot. Second best was drafting a friends UHAUL down highway one in Delaware (FLAT!) so even loaded I got 23MPG. Average was close to 20 every tankful except if I was hotrodding around town or running late to work too often. I ran summer tires (Michelin) and winter tires/wheels. Gas with winter tires is 3 mpg less with both Sequoia and the 00 Tundra.
I love my 03 Sequoia, but I miss my old 00 Tundra every time I go up to the gas pumps or stomp the gas pedal. As a curious sidenote, I test drove six Tundras before I bought that 00 and have driven a few (friends) Tundras since and that 2000 Tundra ran noticeably stronger than the others.
Not just me, some of my more motorhead friends were impressed with it also.
If the 00 Tundra would have had a stick shift, I would never have traded it in.
In like manner, if the Sequoia got better gas mileage, I'd run it till the wheels fell off. Further note with the Sequoia there is a large amount of MPG falloff between going 65-70 (or slower) highway and going 70-75 while the 00 Tundra did not care much MPG wise if it went 60 70 or 80. The Tundra had a bed cover. PS, I have always checked MPG every tank of gas, just a habit.
