I am trying to select a good replacement battery for my 2001 Sequoia.
Consumer Reports has reviewed car batteries and has found major differences between the different brands. For example, Sears Diehard ranks quite low on their ratings list.
The problem is that I can't find the battery group that is appropriate for the Sequoia. On my battery the group is listed as "27R".
But on the comsumerreports.com site the only battery groups they review are: 65, 75, 24/24F, 34/78, and 35. Under the description it says that the group 35 battery fits "most recent Toyota vehicles".
Several NAPA batteries and Everstart (Walmart) batteries are highly rated but the ratings for brands varies greatly within battery group categories.
My local Toyota dealer will be happy to install a Toyota battery. But I would like to go with a highly rated battery. Who knows how good a Toyota Battery is?
Any ideas? Thanks.
John
About the only "strange" thing to watch for is the reversed +/- terminals (thus the "R"). An "F" suffix means the same thing, so a 27R = 27F form factor. Even if Consumer Reports didn't review them, 27F form factor isn't all that uncommon. If you want to use a reviewed battery, you'll have to measure the size of your battery tray and the clearance to the hood to make sure a different form factor will fit (although I'm pretty certain a 24F form factor will fit OK in a Sequoia).
From all the reading I have done and from personal experience, there are only two choices, Optima or Interstate. Interstates have ratings of 84 months. That is amazing. The choice is basically price and preference. In my opinion, all the Autozone, Sears, Walmart, etc batteries are basically the same, 2 to 3 years and you are looking for another. My 0.02
If you want a battery that you don't need to worry about for a long time and don't mind paying for the best, go with an AGM-type battery: Odyssey makes them and here is a table with specs: ODYSSEY Batteries - Battery Specifications
I replaced Interstate batteries on my boat last year with the Odyssey batteries and they are great. As usual, you get what you pay for and a good battery that won't leave you stranded when you need it most is worth paying a little extra for in my opinion.
