1Gen-SequoiaGeneral discussion forum for the first generation 2001 to 2007 Toyota Sequoia.
This is a discussion thread titled "Need expert help Transfer Case Blew", within the 1Gen-Sequoia forum, part of the SUV Forums category.
Hi All, I was up north hunting when I got stuck in an '01 sequoia. Attempting to unstick myself something blew. Originally thought it was the tranny as reverse and drive would not engage but 1st and 2nd would. Pulled tranny pan and was clean w/out any metal ect. Drained the t-case and was very black with metal chunks and shavings so I replaced it with a used case from an "03 with 70k on it. Everything in two wheel drive works great and the tranny seems to shift better now than before.
The problem I am having is upon engaging four high. I can hear the actuator in the t-case and at the front differential, both click, however the end result is no power to the rear drive shaft and the front drive shaft spins powered by the t-case. Shifting in reverse or drive is the same result. Placing the t-case in four low is the same result, however, upon locking the center differential, tranny in first & t-case in four low, I have power to the rear wheels. If I shift out of 1st the same thing happens a click and no power to rear and front shaft spins powered by t-case. I dont know what is going on and I cant afford to turn it over to a mechanic to parts replace me into bankruptcy. I have thought it could be the new t-case but I cant believe another could be bad. What I think could be is that maybe the t-case acts like an open diff unless the center diff is locked so if there is no resistance in the front diff, ie A.D.D. actuator not engaging clutch or clutch sleeve and clutch shot, then the t-case will not send power to the rear. Like jacking one wheel off the ground the wheel off the ground gets the torque. I dont know. Please help provide some insite. Thanks.
Well, I replaced the used t-case with another just to eliminate the possibility. The result was the same as the first. Conclusion is the t-case acts as an open differential and with no resistance from the front propeller shaft power is sent to path of least resistance. I removed the a.d.d actuator and found clutch sleeve and clutch to be intact and actuator working properly, diff fluid was normal. So my new question is would it be better to attempt to rebuild and tear into the front end or find a used axle assembly?
I'm sorry I can't help you with your problem but you might want to ask one of the Mods to move your post into the engine & drivetrain segment to get better exposure. The Sequoia and Tundra should have similar drive trains and you're more likely to see a Tundra owner with your problem than with a Sequoia.
Good Luck, Larry

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????

The 01 and 03 transfer cases are different, I find it very cool to know it bolts in. I'd love to know if you got it working, the 01 & 02 model Sequoia is basically an open center diff with a locker that can only be locked while in 1st gear 4Lo, whereas I understand the 03-up model can be locked in 4Hi or 4Lo regardless of gear. I beileve this a conversion I'd be interested should I end up wheeling my Sequoia a lot one day. Sounds like you have some electronics issues with the cases, plugs and harness must be the same or similar. I have to wonder if you could have bought the transfer case computer and dash buttons along with the case and converted it to 03 up style case.
Hey why not my Air conditioning mechanicals has been converted to 06 up model and my front brakes are 03 up type - both are modifications I would recommend.
