I have a 2002 Sequoia with 64K miles on it. I brought my car to Toyota of Irving, in Irving, TEXAS and the dealer replaced both sides of the lower ball joints and then performed the alignment for free of charge.
They said it was a recall. What a deal.... we have a new set of lower ball joints and the car is now driving straight because of the alignment.
Please call your dealership and make appointments for this service.

Thats a GREAT deal for you!!! With 64000 miles on your truck and then haveing that done, I bet it made the truck nice and tight and like new again. The more miles you have on your truck the better the deal is!!!! LOL Johnnnny

And will the fix actually "fix" the problem? (If they knew about it and continued to pump out Seq's and Tundra's with the problem, you gotta wonder if they have a fix!)
Any links to articles saying they knew about this before?
Please set me straight on this, as it is, I'm confused.
These are 2 differrent recalls. The first one was for the BJ on older models due to a manufacturing error.
This recall is on the newer models now. They didn't know they had a problem on the nwer ones until just recently.
At least they are stepping up to the plate. toyota is very good about their recalls when there is a problem. They even just did a recall on my 15 year old 4runner - I would liek to see GM or Ford do that!

I own a 2006 Sequoia SR5 4WD. My family is planning on driving to Colorado (from Houston, TX) for a Spring Break skiing trip in early March. I'll bet that I won't have received my recall notice by then. Do you think I should be concerned about driving that far without having the repairs made?
Also, I have heard that there were several accidents that have occurred which were related to the problem that is covered by the recall. Does anyone know the severity of those accidents or any of the details?

11 Accidents, 6 injuries is what I have heard on the news

Yesterday (Monday, January 22, 2007) I dropped my 04 Sequoia Lmt. off at the dealer for repair/recall of the ball joints. They just called me (Tuesday afternoon) to let me know it's ready to pick up. So far so good.
There are a couple of very active discussions on this very topic over in the Tundra section. A couple of unlucky Tundra owners actually had the joint suddenly fail, with out warning, while they were driving This is a major safety issue and should not be ignored. As you know, the Tundra and Sequoia share the same front suspension.
The general consensus over there is the problem is caused by a design that puts excessive stress on the ball joint resulting is premature and catastrophic failure. I suspect that the problem is showing up more often with the trucks because there are more of them in service and they may be used "harder". I understand that the 2007 Tundra (2008 Sequoia) suspension has been redesigned to fix the problem.
My dealer is checking to see if my 2007 (picking up tomorrow) is affected or not. One question I have is if you get the fix how long is it good for or did they fix the current design with a better design? Will we all be in the same boat a few years from now?
What I've never understood is why the earliest (01 prior to a certain build date) Sequoias are not included. It would seem to me they'd be the most vulnerable. Mine was a December 00 production and has never been within the recall window. Any ideas why the early ones are omitted?
My wife just bought a '05 Sequoia last weekend so I gotta call my dealer and set something up. My question is I also have a '00 Tundra I bought new and since both vehicles share the same front end...what about my Tundra???
Since I installed the ProTech EZ lift about 4 years ago I probably won't be covered. I considered several times in the past couple of years removing them because it hasn't driven the same since. Oh well...lose some, win some.

In May 2007, with 65K miles on mt '03 Sequoia, my local dealer here in NJ (Autoland, Rte 22, Union, NJ) replaced both lower Ball Joints. Like many of you, I was bombarded with multiple mailings from Toyota urging me to return to the dealership immediately to have both lower BJ's replaced. All seemed well and I never had ANY probs with the steering the entire time I owned the vehicle.
Fast forward almost 2 years later to today. I have 80K miles on the Sequoia now, and the right front lower BJ has failed. I began to notice steering anomalies over the past week prior to the BJ failing completely. The garage told me I was lucky to get it off the road when I did. However, Toyota refuses to cover this failure stating their work only comes with a 1 year parts and labor warranty.
I love this vehicle and have been a loyal purchaser of Toyota products for years but this is EXTREMELY POOR customer service on Toyota's behalf IMHO. Now I'm looking at $450+ out of pocket to have the lower and upper BJ's replaced on the failed side (passenger) to get back on the road. A failed BJ with a known issue that was supposedly replaced to rectify the problem just under 2 years ago.
This vehicle gets pretty lite duty mostly running kids around the suburbs chasing down soccer games and groceries. Having a failed BJ less than 2 years later is completely unacceptable and definitely detracts from the quality of the brand.
