Does anyone have any idea whats the 2004 tacoma is gonna be like? I have heard that it will be getting a makeover for the 2004 model year but have yet to see anything on the net.
I agree with Chuff I heard a while back that the Tacoma would be redesigned for 03. Well, that didn't pan out. Then I heard alot about the 04 redesign to bennefit from the 4runners improvements, the V6 in particular. Its 2003 and we've heard about all other new 04's but nothing at the shows about the Tacoma. Wow this is going to be one long run for the same truck(save for a few improvements) thats been around since 1995. Anyway I think it'll be worth the wait. hope they keep to the trucks roots and don't add too much technocrap. The new six with a manual and the locking rear diff. will make for a great wheeler. I bet that Toyota is waiting to release the new Tundra d.cab along side the Tacoma. This way they won't have two different trucks with simmilar price tags. This would be the case if the Tacoma was out now, I'm sure it's cost would come dangerously close to the current Tundra.
I heard news (tonight actually) that the 2k4 Taco will be getting an "access cab" TBA midsummer. Also getting a "torquier v6", but the statement was not leading towards more Ci (ala 4.0) or some rework of the 3.4.
If I was a betting man, Id say plan on seeing a ULEV (castrated) version of the 3.4 (3.0?) make its way into the shortbeds, and the 4.0 (ala 4runner) make its way into the newish Acc.Cab and DblCab. I've been wrong before though, so dont quote me on it.
My source was a salesman at my regional truck center.
While I don't really rely on him for fact (as he is in sales ) he did tell me in 2000 there would be a doublecab in 2k1..and there was, and about the redesign in 2k1 as well (which was anyones guess).
Just like to cite the source (yet somewhat vaguely in case hes gonna get squaked at for it) so it doesent become another "internet rumor"
It seems Toyota only shows new models in advance of being on sale. Totally new models do not compete with exisiting stock. Redesigned models cause people to wait and not purchase exisisting stock. I doubt we would see a redesigned Taco at the Auto Shows.
I just hope they don't ruin a good thing, which is what the Tacoma is right now. That is an affordable, extremely reliable, small pickup that can wheel with the likes of Jeep right out of the box. Unfortunatly toyota often does screw things up to make its vehicles more idiot proof. This is the case with the numerous electric nannys now standard on many of its vehicles.
Here is an excerpt from this week's California Job Journal.
"Recently, New United Motor Manufacturing Inc (NUMMI), which operates the Fremont auto plant, won $6.3 million to retrain auto workers building the retooled 2004 Toyota Tacoma truck."
Ewww, I don't like that new look. I'm sticking with the old style, they look better. The new look is leaning towards the new 4Runner styling. They should keep the 4Runner's styling unique and not base the restyling of the new taco's on it. What would be kinda interesting is if they base the tacoma styling on the tundra's looks. Something like this.
I like the look of the 4-runner Tacoma, as long as they don't make it a soccer mom truck. If they make it look just like that blue 4-runner tacoma, have the new 4.0 V-6, or possibly a V-8 and don't touch the current Tacoma chassis I would be very happy driving it.
I think that 4runner front end is sweet, especially the lights. I think it is gonna make for an awesome looking Taco, I just hope that they raise it up a bit more and pass on the 17 inch rims. I also hope they dont use the 4runners guage cluster. And please keep the lever and the locker!!
The worst part of the Taco now is the entire front clip, especially that "grille".
I think you just get used to anything. i hate most of the new stuff but it tends to grow on me. Hey, that new chevy front end is even looking better!!
IMO I'm not sure Toyota will base the new Tacoma off of the 4Runner chasis. The current 4Runner chasis is based off of the Prado which is a SUV sold oversea's. I'm not sure of how they would use this frame as a pickup frame. Although the 4runner frame is fully boxed and very rigid, which would be a good thing for a pickup, I'm not sure it would be applicable.. Anyone have any thoughts? Can they base a pick-truck frame off the Prado?
I do think the Tacoma and 4Runner will share the same front-end fascia and similar interior features and dimensions...

Yes, I defititely do think they could base a pickup truck frame off the Prado, because it is a truck based SUV.
