Exclamation Odd Brake Problem ... Please Help

Im having trouble with my brakes in my 99 tacoma 4X4 and have no clue where to go next and all the shops i take it to cant find anything wrong with it ... While pushing on the brakes everything feels fine right up until i come to a complete stop and then the car jerks real bad and comes to a rough stop ... we have checked the rotors and pads, everything is pretty much brand new and we have bled the breaks a couple times. When i idle in drive and take my foot off the break the truck does not move. A couple people have said that it might be the ABS going bad or the brakes could be sticking but i dont know much about brakes so hopefully someone can help .....

Thanks,
Huey

The piston in the calipers might be sticking, but I doubt it would be both. Is there a specific side the vibration is coming from?

Not that i can tell. It isnt pulling to either side, and it doesnt happen every time. It managed to stop the day i took it in to the shop and didnt start back up until the week after haha... ill look into the pistons and see what i can find out.

Thanks for the reply ... any other suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated

Huey

It could be a few things. Tires out of round sometimes cause vibration. Doesn't matter if they are balanced either. Did you rotate them at all yet and notice if the same problem occurs?

Bearings in the wheels could be shot. How many miles on the truck?

I doubt the wheel bearings are to blame. Rotate the tires if you get a chance and report back the results.

Sounds like the rear axle seal(s) are leaking and the rear brakes are sticking.

Next time it acts up feel your rear wheels and see if one is hot. When I picked up my 2002 in Pittsburgh the emergency brake was sticking on. I caught it and loosened it enough to get home (8 1/2 hours) but a neighbour's wife was stranded on the driving lane of the highway when the back brakes in her '95 Tacoma seized up. A half-hour later she drove it away, presumably after the drums had cooled down.

My mechanic fixed my Tacoma's problem. It was a partially-seized coupling where the emergency brake cable joins the transverse cable which runs between the back brake drums. The little swivel gets corroded and won't allow the rear drums to loosen evenly when the brake comes off. One or the other gets hot. Adjustment is thrown off by the imbalance, as well.

Hope this helps,

Rod
