Default I 4 Offroad power?

I posted this in this in the Tacoma fourm and didnt get a response. Any info or feed back would be nice.

I was originally interested in 4cyl 4x4 Tacoma. I like the short wheel base without the cab and i think it would be a fun off road toy. My main concern would be the power. Does the 4cyl. give enought power to go offroading? i would definitely put some 33"s on it (probably Mud Tires).
I think all V-6s have a cab.

I might have to wait a couple years it depends. I love my Tundra but the Tacoma is much more capable off road. Also is the locker standard on all 4x4's?

Feel free to Post Pics of the RC Taco if anyone has em. I would love to see a newer one on 33"s

Check out Yotatech.com, lot of good people there, and TTORA.com as well (if you can stand all the BS and hair pulling sissy fights).

The thing about running around offroad is, you really don't need a lot of input torque, just a lot of output torque. As long as you have a nice low range in the transfer case to turn larger tires offroad, you'll be fine.

Going up a long hill on the highway at altitude with a bunch of gear in the bed, that's gonna be a different story ...so will trying to follow a 1st-gen Tundra with a V8 blasting across the desert, if that's what you're thinking when you say offroad...not that it won't be a great time, but it's a small engine. I've driven a reg. cab 4cyl Taco, they're nothing to brag about and you'll notice a lack of power compared to your 2nd-gen especially, but it's not like the 4cyl reg. cabs are gutless either.

The rear e-locker is not a standard item, it's part of the TRD offroad package.

*edit* oh...hey...to which generation Tacoma were you referring? I assumed you meant 95.5-04 since they're smaller & the de facto late model Toyota offroad standard...the 05+ access cab is equivalent in size to a 1st-gen Tundra.

Thanks for the feedback. i wish the new Tacomas had the V6 without a cab. IMO the RC's look very nice. Especially the older ones.

i had a 2000 tacoma with the 2.7 and automatic. I had 31x10.5 dunlop mud rovers on it. I have a pic of it in my gallery. The power was very good for an I4. dont expect to punch it off the line and have V8 power but if you would be driving and punch it it would take off for a 2.7 i was surprised. If you go 33's on one, go with 33x10.5's as most people with the I-4 do and only notice a slight loss compared to a 33" tire thats wide! I had no issues off roading and i had it threw some crazy mud!!

2.7 have enough power for off road. I have 32 inch tires and they don't lose any power over the stock 31. 33's would lose a little more. You have to lift to get the 33's on and they might still rub. I lifted my truck 2.5 inches and have run 32 11.50 x 15 and 265 75 x 16 and no rub.

Lockers are not standard. I installed a Powertrax NoSlip on mine and it works great.

Only problem i encounter with it is when a ditch or huge dip comes up.
The Tacoma's are in a diff class off road and i am considering getting one as an offroad toy within a couple years.

Not a regular cab, but an I4 none the less. The 4cyl is an amazing motor. It's very strong for its size, and reliable! I have 180,000 on mine without so much as a hiccup. Granted I regeared for the larger tires (I'm running 4.88s), so power is certainly not an issue for me, but it's a great truck.
