Check out Yotatech.com, lot of good people there, and TTORA.com as well (if you can stand all the BS and hair pulling sissy fights).
The thing about running around offroad is, you really don't need a lot of input torque, just a lot of output torque. As long as you have a nice low range in the transfer case to turn larger tires offroad, you'll be fine.
Going up a long hill on the highway at altitude with a bunch of gear in the bed, that's gonna be a different story

...so will trying to follow a 1st-gen Tundra with a V8 blasting across the desert, if that's what you're thinking when you say offroad...not that it won't be a great time, but it's a small engine. I've driven a reg. cab 4cyl Taco, they're nothing to brag about and you'll notice a lack of power compared to your 2nd-gen especially, but it's not like the 4cyl reg. cabs are gutless either.
The rear e-locker is not a standard item, it's part of the TRD offroad package.

*edit* oh...hey...to which generation Tacoma were you referring? I assumed you meant 95.5-04 since they're smaller & the de facto late model Toyota offroad standard...the 05+ access cab is equivalent in size to a 1st-gen Tundra.
