1Gen-TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 1995 to 2004 Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Fuel system problem?", within the 1Gen-Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have a 2004 Tacoma crew cab V6. I take excellent care of this truck, but I believe I have a fuel system issue. I've replaced the in-line filter 3 seperate times, and last just recently. However, there are times when I'm driving, usually at lower speeds but can be anytime, and when I let up on the gas peddle and then re-apply it I sometime get nothing, or a lack of accelleration, a feeling of thickness, or feeling that no fuel is getting to the cylinders, or sometimes a high RPM rev and the tranny feels like it's not engaging. These symptoms are generally short but can be frequent during a given driving period. The symptons are also in-frequent throughout a week or two but will return at some later time. HELP? This is driving me crazing. I have the skills to fix it but I don't know what it is. anyone have any suggestions.
Clean the MAF sensor and see if that helps. The MAF acts like an acclerator pump in an old CARB vehicle. Just because they are dirty does not mean they will always set a code.
The other thing like ddnail said, check the trans and make sure the fluid is set to the proper level. I am assuming it is an automatic?
Are there any codes stored?? Just because the engine light is on does not mean there is NO code.
Tune? NGK or Denso plugs?

2004 Tacoma was the first year they switched to Drive-By-Wire throttle bodies. Some people had them fail completely. Your symptoms sound a lot like the same related to a faulty TB.
I doubt the transmission is to blame here, unless a solenoid is acting up.

Thanks for the responses. I've tuned the truck recently. All plugs, wires, fluids have been changed out. I do this regularly. The trans fluid was just flushed for the second time in the trucks life and the fluid is has always been clean and at the correct level. The truck is an early 2004 model so I'll look into the MAF and Throttle Body. Question...should I be able to hear the throtle body injecting fuel? Because I can hear the fuel being sprayed when I rev the engine...I can't remember if this was the case when I first bought it. I had on old chevy 88 that had a throttle body injector and when it was going bad I could hear the fuel being forced through the injectors. just curious. Thanks again for the good advice.
For the fuel spraying question, I'm not positive as the 2003 Tacoma I owned still had a throttle cable. The DBW system works different though. I would take the intake pipe off and look at the butterfly moving when you rev the engine. Make sure you do it where you're not going to be sucking up any dust either.
