The shifter itself is moving on its own?

No the shifter doesnt move but like if I am backing up and if I dont give it enough gas it will slip into neutral, same with drive when I come to a stop sign it does the same thing.

Does the shifter feel lose like it has some play in it? If the shift cable is lose, it's very easy not to be fully engaged in gear. If it's not that, your tranny has some problems.

I have an '02 Double Cab Prerunner and mine has started doing the same thing, except mine only does it in drive. It'll do it while stopped at a red light and also if I brake but do not come to a full stop and then I hit the gas again sometimes. What did you figure out? I think the shifter cable is just loose on mine... at least I hope.

Anyone have any info. on this? My slipping out of drive seems to happen most when I have to brake hard when coming to a stop and also when the engine is completely warm yet. Really need some advice on this!

As I said before, are your shifters moving at all? If not, I would believe the shift cable is loose. Get a friend to sit underneath the truck while you move the shift lever from P to D to find the cable. Look for the adjustment, and tighten it up!

Thanks! No, the shifter isn't moving so it must be the cable... hopefully.

I recently had the transmission fluid changed at 65,000 miles and the problem is gone now. I didn't know the last time it had been changed so I went ahead and did it. Haven't had a problem w/ it shifting out of gear in 2 weeks. It was better the day the tranny fluid was changed.

I had a 240d benz that did this. New shifter linkage bushing fixed theproblem.
