Don't you have to be in neutral to lock the rear??

Flashing means it is not engaged. To shift into 4low, you must be in neutral first, then press the button for it.

RTFM!

But the truck must be in 4 high, then shifted into neutral, 4lo engaged, then put back intro drive before it will engage. Just the way I remember doing it.

If it continues to flash, you might have to go to the dealership.

You should be in 4-low unless you've done the gray wire mod.
Then when it flashes you slowly move forward and turn the wheels a bit.
It should go in with a clunk.
Mine sometimes takes up to 30 seconds to engage.
If it still don't work then "The Phoenix" is right.
You could always try to fix it yourself.

when trying to get in 4 lo you shouldnt move forward or anything you should be at a full stop on fairly level ground. you only roll it or put it in drive and go slightly forward in 4 Hi. In 4 hi you can be on the freeway where ever just hit the switch and keep it under ~60 (the speed is 62 or something on the Tundra im not sure what the speed is on the Tacoma.)

Try putting it in 4low then push the locker button. Get on some dirt(or anything but pavement) and turn left and right a few times. Sometimes you need to get the axles turning different speeds to get it to engage.

I had a 99 taco and this worked every time. Hope this helps!
