Default Weak 3RZ

Maybe you people can help me. I have a 2001 Tacoma 4x4 access cab with 2.7, auto trans. I bought this truck with 32,000 miles on it and it seemed a little weak so I changed the 16 inch tires to 225 15 inch, that helped a little, at least I could use cruise now, before it down shifted on anything but flat or down hill grades. I changed plugs, cleaned throttle body, MAF sensor and no change. I had it scanned at a good local mechanic and he said there is nothing wrong. My mileage has never been great 16-18 and as low as 10 in the winter. I dont now what the gear ratio is but it cruises at 2250@60mph. I have about 58,000 on it now and it's never changed. On one steeper hill it downshifts to 2nd gear. I have had several 22R 's in the past and I thought this would be an improvement. One other thing, when the engine is cold it is noticably doggier and once its in 4th gear it will not accelerate without shifting down. The ETC in power mode doesn't help much it shifts quicker but also downshifts alot more, and milage is worst. This is all not hauling anything and with an aluminum topper. Our 05 Corolla handles everything alot better than the Tacoma, it goes up that big hill holding at 60 downshifting only to 3rd. Sorry this is so long.

The Phoenix will become famous soon enough.

The 3RZ is not a torque monster to begin with. I think you are looking to have the engine give you something it's just not capable of. It is however, a very reliable engine and with normal maintenance you will get a lot of life out of it.

In a nutshell, there's not much you can do. Don't listen to anyone telling you to get intakes and exhausts either.

The problem is the auto transmission. I have the 2.7 with the 5 speed and I have enough power.
