Guys I'm looking for a way to disable the ABS on my 03 taco 4x4 trd. I've had enough of the computer taking over and pulsing all the way to the bottom of a small hill i have to drive eveyday. Not to mention all the near misses due to the system releasing the brakes. I lived with the problem for a long time thinking it was just the junk stock tires. I replaced all four tires with Dueler AT Revo's a week ago and the problem is the same. I have a buddy with a taco and Blizakks. We'll pulled those and put them on my truck, Same thing (buddies taco does same thing. That's why he bought the Blizakes). The ABS system on this truck stinks and toyota says it's working noramlly. Here's the senerio. Pull out of my drive way, drive about 5 mins. Slow to about 15mph and crest the hill that leads down to a stop sign. The hill is appox 3 blocks long and it takes every bit of two blocks to stop from 15 mph. Now i tried the same thing (same day) in my old beater front drive lebaron with $30 pepboys tires with 70K miles on them and no ABS. Not a problem, stops in a few car lengths from 30mph. I don't want to have the conversation about if i should or should not disable the ABS. It's getting done. I'm just asking if anyone here knows a simple and easyway to do it. I know the 05+ owners have a way to tap into the fuse block and run a switch. Anyone know how to do it on the 2003 model?
The only way to disable your ABS is to pull out the ABS fuses in the fuse box under the hood. I'm not sure about runnng a switch to the fuse but simply pulling the fuses is easier.
Yours might have one or two ABS fuses if it's two or four wheel ABS.
I can live with an ABS light. I can't live with the brakes not working. I'm considering buying an FJ for the GF. Any idea if they have the same ABS problems as the Taco's?
I agree with your observations. On slippery surfaces when I brake, my Tundra slides forward as though the brakes are not applied at all, thanks to ABS.
So this is more wide spread than just the Tacoma. Well we just got about 6 inches of snow here in chicago overnight. I've been thinking of getting the GF an FJ. Looks like a good time for a test drive. We're not buying it if it acts like my Taco. This thing is dangerous.

This is one of those times where friction from skidding would probably work better than the brakes pulsating very fast on a slippery surface. I can recall several times where trying to stop on snow takes longer with ABS versus non. Boy I miss my 02 Standard Cab Tacoma.

Pulled the main fuse in the fuse block under the hood and it seems to have done the trick. I do have to live with the ABS light but a piece of black tape hides it fairly well so...........

I believe you can remove the bulb in the cluster if you would like as well.

I have never had any issues on road with my ABS. Here in Alberta we see our fair share of slick roads. The only time the anti-lock has been a problem is off roading as it tends to let the wheels continue to dig when the truck has lost momentum. I will be disabling the ABS in 4hi. I know that in 4low it is deactivated. What I was saying before my ADD kicked in lol is that ABS has always been helpful to me on the street. Maybe i'm just lucky that way.

sounds to me like one of your abs sensors is bad. possibly a front one too. you may have to unplug each one individually and drive a bit and see which one it is, as im pretty sure an obd2 code reader wont read the abs codes....but i could be wrong. i would just unplug and see what happens, than you can replace accordingly if that is indeed the problem.
^^ Steering wheel shaking is probably due to warped rotors. Real simple to change out. Just go to Autozone and get some duralast rotors. They have a 2 year warranty, so if they ever warp, you can take them in for new ones. Also, pick up a set of ceramic pads while you're there, too.
The ABS light could be a damaged sensor. You will need to have the code pulled. Usually, only dealerships carry the ABS scan tool, and they charge around $70 to use.

FJC's ABS and ATRAC systems are more aggressive than a 4Runner/Tacoma. Still not sure if that will aleviate the problem, but at least you don't have problems with the TRAC system. I had that on my 02 4Runner, and if there was any slippage detected (even the slightest), the computer will cut the power to the engines immediately. Scary when trying to make a turn with a little bit of snow on the road and there is a train of cars coming towards you!
