1Gen-TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 1995 to 2004 Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Engine knocks on older Tacoma?", within the 1Gen-Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I am wondering- does the 3.4L in the older Tacomas have engine knock issues? I have heard of it before on the 3.0L, which I describe below.
I am wondering, because I have a chance to purchase a 1992 Toyota 4wd extended cab pickup, with the 3.0L V6/automatic for only $600, which seems like a steal to me. ? The owner says that the engine has a rod knocking. I think this truck is still worth this, but not sure. I have heard of this before on other 3.0L as well as bad headgaskets, which I think should be replaced at the same time with the engine apart. Reason I ask here is because I think I remember reading somewhere of the 3.4L having some knock issues and did not know if the two were related or not, so would appreciate any info on that as well.
Can anyone tell me about how much $$$ I will be looking at into getting the rod knock fixed, as well as headgaskets on this truck?

Thanks in advance!
I have never heard of a 3.4 having knocking issues. As far as how much it will cost to get your 3.0 fixed, it really depends. If its got very high miles, you are probably going to want to do a complete rebuild. That can run about $1000- $2000, depending on how much machine work needs to be done. If you just fix the rod that is knocking(assuming that is the problem) it could be less than $100 if all you need is a rod bearing and you do it yourself. But if one rod is already knocking, chances are you will have more problems along the way.
If that truck is in good shape and the frame isnt rotted, Buy it! That is a very good deal, even if you need to sink some money into the motor. Who knows, even with a knock that thing could still have another 100k in it. Its a Toyota. Good luck!
