a buddy of mine has a 2000 taco. wonder if he's got the same problems. he's a harbor pilot, so most of his truck's life was probably spent near the ocean.

FUTURE MODS -
25-30 ft Travel Trailer....... bye bye Pop-Up
The dealer here just started the frame inspections this week and I see they pulled a 97 and a 98 off the road. Road salt through the winter is a real killer here in the north. I have a show room mint 99 that has been sprayed with oil twice since I bought it new and still waiting for my letter to bring it in. I crawled under it this week and it's sound so the oil did it's job. The two that were pull off the road actually had holes rotted through the frame.....
Man I went to my Toyota Dealer today and they had at least 35 Tacomas out back that failed. I asked a salesman what they were doing with them and he thinks they are junking all of them. I gotta find out there that 99 TRD v6 5spd is going. I would love to turn it into a off road rig
Well all you guys whose frames pass will have an overstock of parts at most junkyards and they will be cheap!

I've called several different dealers and ask them if this was true and none of them had heard about it. I also called Toyota and they said that this wasn't some type of promotion it was a warranty extension it applied to all 1995-2000 Tacomas that fall within the VIN range in the notice sent out to the dealers.

My truck is going in tomorrow to be checked out. I have a soft spot but I didn't hit it really hard. We'll see what they say. I wish I hadn't hosed off the frame ever time I washed it in the winter.

Great point!! So you think we'd have to go to the yards to get them? Any chance we could buy them from the dealer/ Toyota?
I can see Toyota sening them to the scrapyards - it's easier that way and no liability on their part. So what would the title situation be on these trucks? Salvage to start with, then we may be able to convert it to a rebuilt?

Yeah I highly doubt you'll be able to get these off toyotas hands. If you were to get it from a salvage yard It would have a salvage title yes. I think with a bunch of paperwork you can convert it to rebuilt and just not be able to get good insurance on it. My buddy did this with a Jeep a few years back and he is still driving it today!

My 2001 Tacoma (which I absolutely love) is completely infested with rust on the frame.... does anyone know if Toyota will be extending the effort into the '01 model year? Thanks!
From talking to several dealers Toyota is pulling them for safety/liability reasons and will be crushing and recycling them.

Just found out today my 97 Tacoma FAILED. It looked pretty decent still underneath, no rust holes, and had passed inspection in December. Dealer said safe to drive still for now, and okay to strip down before I bring it in. I have brand new Revo's on there that I'll swap out for an old set of steel rims and old tires for the last drive.
Financially it's good for me, but it's kinda sad too; can't buy a new truck like that today with manual hubs, manual transfer case, manual windows etc.;
There were probably 30 old Tacomas parked in the back lot at the dealer.
