1Gen-TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 1995 to 2004 Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Rusty Tacoma Frames, and Toyota's Solution", within the 1Gen-Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
MY truck failed and I got a notice of how much $ I'm going to get. My truck is still certainly drivable for now though. I'm thinking about holding out for an '09, but the $1000 recall rebate is apparently good for 60 days only. Will Toyota make me turn my truck in right away or I can I run it for a while until I locate another truck to buy?
The word I'm getting now from ISG is Toyota wants the truck turned in ASAP as soona s the check for me is ready, so I guess no hanging on to it until an '09 is available.
Just saw piccies of all the Tacomas that got turned in...there's about 16,000 so far. Sorry...can't post any piccies as my source is a TMS upper management type. Expects about 50k more trucks to be turned in over the buy back program. Many have been turned down because they didn't meet the ownership requirements. Only one owner got to strip their truck down (that one "got" by). Saw lots of parts I could use... I think they all were supposed to be crushed...
I saw a few piccies of frames cracked above the rear axle. Lot of nice looking bodies and accessories, too!
So far, I've seen two car carriers loaded with them. Some had shredded tarps, like they tried to conceal them. While at my local dealer today, I saw about 30 of them waiting to be picked up.

09's are being released early. They will start arriving at dealers lots in June.
That's what I'm hearing now from my local dealer. It's been frustrating talking to different dealers over the past month because some would take the time to find out and some would just say "maybe November".
Gave up my truck and got a check Friday, just 7 days after I mailed back the agreement. I guess it just happened to just be timed close to when Toyota issued the check and the ISG guy had his next visit scheduled at the local dealer. I've got friends at work who have been waiting longer at other places.
I was just at my Toyota Dealership and I saw 12 Tacos sitting there waiting to be crushed. Aslo about 2 weeks before that I saw 8 trucks all PA trucks heading to Indy to get crushed. My toyota parts guy Lee told me that he thinks that Toyota is taking those turned in Tacos and taking the motor and transmissions out of them and selling them to slavage yards for prophit. He also said that Toyota being the #1 selling car manfacture in the world is starting to turn into GM. Also he thinks that Toyota will extend their recall on Tacos because he saw an 04 Taco with frame rust. He himself has an 01 Taco that was month over the recall so he is pretty ticked off about that. His truck has oly 88k.
has anyone used this extended warranty ? if so what about aftermarket accessories such as lift kits bigger tires etc? will a toytec 3 inch suspension lift and 3 inch body lift matter ?
This is my first post to this list. I have been reading it for a month or so and have an '01 Tacoma. I have had two prior Tacomas with no rust issues. In fact no issues at all. With only 100K miles, I had planned to drive it for at least another 100. There was no need for a hammer to find the rust on mine. This is a pretty disappointing problem and obviously a design and/or process issue. Does any one know what year the design changed from a box to a C shaped frame? It seams like the all of the box frame variety will have no resale value and likely to have the same rust problem.
I'm waiting to hear from Toyota regarding how they will deal with my early '01 which seems no different than an '00 to me.
Check the original campaign documentation ... The latest model year targeted by the current campaign is 2000, and the focal problem is attributed to a lack of sufficient surface treatment on the frames sourced to Toyota for Tacomas during the affected years.
For all anyone knows, there may eventually be a campaign for additional Tacoma model years. For now, though, it's all about 1995.5 - 2000 model years and a particular state of decay relating to a particular attributed cause ...
Well, around here, rust is not really a problem, IF the truck is originally from here. The local Tacomas have no rust at all. One of my friends mother has a 1995 Tacoma and frame is even still free of surface rust. However, one of our local Toyota dealers have apparently started going "up north" and buying Tacomas recently. There are about 55 on the lot now, from 1995-98 models, NONE of which seem to be for sale, despite being on part of the lot where they appear to be for sale, save for a couple that have a "warning" sticker on the windshield saying the truck is property of Toyota Motor Co. Strange, those have some frame surface rust, but there was one with rust HOLES on the frame that did not have the notice. Otherwise, these trucks look good... no rust anywhere else. I am assuming that ALL of them are going to be smashed into little pancakes. Are they even crushing the ones with a little surface rust?
There was a 1997 Tacoma SR5 (LOADED to the MAX) that I was interested in when it first arrived- this was when I first found out about the frame rust issues on these. I went online and found out about the recall. The "internet" salesman said the price was something like $6000, but I commented on the surface rust on the frame and the recall and he seemed like he did not care after that. The truck is still there and when I call, they say its been SOLD, but its been there for about 8 weeks, not moved and has stickers on it as if it were for sale. I am about to go down and put "SOLD" on it.
Well, on all of them actually. They have a couple of "good" ones that they want like $12000 for.
FWIW, they also have a 2000 Tundra that has heavy frame rust scale. . First I had ever seen before on a Tundra.... it had a New York sticker on it though, so I guess that explains it.
With that said, I found a local 97 T100 4wd that I am interested in that I can get for about $4500. No rust, but has some repairable body damage that I might buy.

I think one will have to be very cautious now with this frame rust issue. So what happens if you buy one next week, find out about the "recall" a few weeks later, take it in and it fails? Are you screwed? My dad was wanting one and those years fall into his $ range. I'd be careful, but damn I'd love to get my hands on some for a rig!

I have a 2001 4-door and the dealer said only 95-00 models were affected. I tried to get a WV inspection sticker Friday and couldn't because there was a 16 inch long gap in the passenger side frame from where the spring connects & another 8 inch gap under the front passenger door. I called the 800 number for Toyota and the man was very attentive. Especially when I told him I was getting ready to hook onto a 20 ft travel trailer. I have a claim number and an appointment for a dealer inspection this Tuesday. If they say it's not covered because it's an 01 I'm going to have them put an inspection sticker on it and sign a paper acknowledging the condition of the frame.
I'm a Tundra owner, but my Father in law owns a 98 Tacoma. He racked it up today (we're an independant import repair shop) to change oil, routine maint., etc. before a trip this weekend and we found this. The letter came about 6 weeks ago. I noticed a lack of pics in this thread and thought I'd share. It'll be off to the dealer shortly. I'll keep eveyone posted. FYI- 1998 Limited 4x4 MT 98,000 miles. These rails are unmolested by us, no hammer test required. And we're in Wisconsin, certainly part of the rust belt. Enjoy.
