For those of you out there with V6 4X4 Tacomas-- I was just wondering how happy you guys are with your trucks. I own an 02 Tundra that is just way too much truck for me and was thinking of buying a Tacoma. My Tundra's a great truck and I am just wondering what Tacoma owners think of their trucks.
Had a 2000 Tundra and now have a 2002 Tacoma crew cab. Mine came with the TRD installed supercharger. Crew cab is nice, I can sit in the back and knees do not hit the seat in front of you. In between those 2 trucks I had a tacoma with 2.7 4 banger with auto. No power what so ever. I drove the V6 without the SC and and power was not bad but no where near what the tundra had(or the SC one). If you can live with less power the truck is great, plenty of room Im 6' tall and fit very comforable. Ride is a little harsher than the tundra, but not bad. Long trips are not a problem. Gas mileage may not improve all that much, maybe 2 to 3 mpg more than the tundra. Im getting around 16 to 17 with the supercharger around town which is not city type driving but what I call rural type driving, where you have a few lights and speed limits of 40 to 45 most of the time. Probably would hit 19 to 20 on the highway.
05s are rumered to have more HP and a new design. Hope this helps. Any more questions please ask

THanks for your help.
I have a 99 with 125k miles on it. At 108k, the battery went dead. other than that, never a problem. I have a 5 speed and it is no doubt the best of the 5 toyota trucks that I have owned. Parking, maneuverability are much better than the Tundra (I drive one on the job occasionally). With the Tundra, the suicide doors in a parking lot are tough; the front seats don't come forward enough for access, so you have to open the rear doors. Power is the key issue - you may have gotten used to the big V8 - it can be quite a shock going back to the V6. At 6'4" there is little chance of anyone fitting in the seat behind me, but I rarely carry more than one other person..
For me, still owning full size trucks in addition to my Tacoma DoubleCab, the rough ride is a major adjustment. I'm hoping aftermarket shocks can soften that up a bit.
Back seat room is very good. Front seat width can be a little problematic, my elderly, slightly chubby and arthritic mother has a difficult time finding the seat belt anchor down next to the console.
Also, the truck definitely shows it's roots as a utility vehicle, with few interior amenities - no nice sound system, no lights-on warning chime, no auto-darkening mirror, no compass, no pad to keep your key ring from audibly slamming the dash on bumps, and electric seats available only with the Limited package. The product planners plainly did not consider this to be in the same buyer segment as the 4-runner.
On the good side I find it quiet, comfortable, zippy and fun to drive. Everything considered, I love the truck, and if the next design addresses some of the shortcomings, I'll definitely be buying another.

How does that SC v6 compare to the Tundra v8 in power?

The tacoma will pull better at all levels. It should pull better more HP and 700 less lbs of weight. If I had to take a stab in the dark, I would guess a 7 to 7.5 0-60 and a 15 something 1/4 mile. It gets up to 60 pretty quick from dead stop.
OK thanks, I was just curious. I think it was Motor trend that tested a supercharged double cab Tacoma and got 0-60 in 8 seconds and the quarter mile in about 16.
You think you would like to bring your truck to the Dyno run on March 29th. If so visit the New England section and sign up.

I think it was the first year that the double cab came out and the tests were done by Motor Trend magazine I believe. It was proabably 2001. Motor trend lists a quarter mile time of 16 seconds for a stock 2wd Tundra yet look at my signature!

Pretty quick, I think the year I bought the tundra it tested around 8.0 for 0-60 and like 15.9 for the 1/4. Getting an SC for the tundra? How are those SCs making out now, heard there were problems early on.
Look for the thread started by Hodgeee recently in general chat. He raced his friends Ford lightening. The best I've seen posted for a TRD supercharged Tundra was 14.3 @ about 95.

I think I read that the other day, his engine dies or something when it hits 3rd or something. Nice run though. How much HP are the tundra SCs running, got to be 360 or so. Those lightnings are fast no doubt about it.
It says in the thread. Something like 360-380 horsepower and 415 torque and the computer retards the timing on the shifts to save the weak transmission, which slows times down.
