Default Offroad with a Prerunner?

Do any of you guys who have a Prerunner use it offroad? I am curious how well it does. How much does the rear locker help?

My tundra is a 2wd and We use it off road all the time. I would recommend a locker vs a limited slip. The extra roughness of the terrain will push past the limited slip clutches and render it useless. The locker will not give (unless it breaks) and should provide a greater amount of traction. Make sure you bring along a tow strap, first aid kit and plenty of water and always go out in pairs of vehicles. If your buddies have a 4x4 they can be useful just in case you get into a place where the locker just isnt enough. For the most part a Pre-runner will handle almost anything a regular 4x4 can, its usually the driver that makes the biggest difference. Have fun off road and be careful.

I wonder how one would do in the sand at the beach? If you air down the tires and turn on the locker would it do ok you think?

They do fine, just don't stop in sand and keep the locker on.

I have done a fair amount of wheeling in the sand at Hatteras and it can get a little hairy when the sand is soft and you have to break out of the ruts. I can get a prerunner much cheaper than a 4x4 and I do not use the 4x4 but five or six times per year so it would be a nice options if it will work for Hatteras duty.

I wheeled my Taco for a few years in 2WD. You should see the **** I did in it First thing I did was add a lift (spacer on the front and an add a leaf in the rear, cheap lift), put on 33x12.5's, and added a locker. The wide tires and locker allowed me to do a LOT. Did OK on sand, just don't stop in real light stuff. Did good in mud and water too as long as you got momentum. That is the main thing with wheeling a 2WD, stay heavy on the skinny pedal. I'll try and find some pics for ya...

I finally got tired of the limited amount of wheeling I could do so I did a 4WD conversion, upgrade to 35's, and added a front locker. My truck has come a long way. Next step is to do an SAS...

Later...

How would a Pre-Runner do in snow/drive around icy roads with a locker? Anyone have any personal experience?

for icy roads they say you want a limited slip and not a locker.

No, for icy roads, you want some chains (and do not engage the rear locker). The two enemies of a 2WD is snow and mud. Putting on chains should be very helpful, though.
