Question Factory cruise control install?

I'm looking at installing a cruise control in my '99 Tacoma since I have a 2 hour drive to and from work. I found a wrecking yard with many rust warranty trucks and the system will cost me $200 for all the stuff I need. I am an electrician and have access to all the wiring diagrams which I've been studying but there is one thing I don't know. Is some or all of the wiring already there for me to plug into or do I have to get all of it from the wrecking yard as well? I'm going to do some exploring under the dash later when I have time however any info on this would be greatly appreciated. in advance, Tim

Your going to need the wiring as well. When adding factory cruise to a 2000 Tacoma, there is a list of things needed and what comes in the kit. There is a wire harness listed also.
The instructions are 49 pages long. Pm me your Fax # and I will try to fax it to you.

Thumbs up Re: Factory cruise control install?

Thanks for the reply. I took a look under the dash and found all the wiring in place as well as the plugs for the ECU and actuator so all I need now is the hardware. I think the only thing that will be a bit of a challange will be the control switch on the steering wheel and even that is plug-n-play.
If I where to put an aftermarket system in I would be looking at more work as there is a separate wire harness and a lengthy proceidure too. Thanks for your help, I'll post my results when...if I get it working I'm going to get the components next week if I find a truck in the yard with factory cruise. Tim

Did you find one ? If not I can sell ya mine. I did a 4WD conversion and ever since then my speedo hasn't worked and thus neither has my cruise. It is a trail rig now anyways so I don't need it...

You might have to help me figure out how to get it out of the truck and what parts you need. Don't think it would be too hard. This is the cruise that came with my Toy when I bought it new back in 2000...

Later...

Hey thanks SA_Sequoia, right now I'm having drive shaft problems, I have to get my cardan unit on the rear shaft fixed and I found a local machine shop that does it but have to wait until monday to bring it there.
I need a cruise unit from a 4 cyl truck and took a look at the wrecker yard but didn't find anything yet so maybe when I have the shaft fixed I'll contact you and see what we can do. Thanks again, Tim

Red face Re: Factory cruise control install?

Well I went back to the scrap yard to find they took in more rusty framed Tacoma's and so now I have many parts as well as the cruise control system I was looking for. So I took the parts I needed home, actuator & cables, ECU, steering wheel switch and the clutch cancel switch. I installed it all in about 1 hour as all the plugs and screw holes where in place, even the cruise light on the dash and all the fuses where there! So then I went for a drive...the light went on when I hit the switch however when I hit "set" it kicked out the ECU and the cruise light started flashing. After much research and diagnostic testing I've come to the conclusion that the problem is the ECU as I removed the system from an automatic truck and mine is standard. There are a couple inputs from the main CPU to the cruise ECU for the automatic trans that look to be important for the operation of the system. Either that or the ECU is just screwed and will have to be replaced, the scrap yard will exchange it free of charge anyway.

I'll write more if and when I make this work. Just so you know I also grabbed a digital dash clock from a truck at the yard and when I removed the dummy plate on my truck to install it there was the plug for the clock already there waiting...that install took a whole 2 minutes!

If anyone has more info about what the problem with my cruise could be please let me know just note that I went through all the circuits and diagnostic testing so far with perfect results. Thanks, Tim

I can still e-mail you the instructions for adding cruise , it has some diag stuff in it too, and part numbers for components if that might help.
