04 Tacoma...Hooked up a trailer a couple weeks back that apparently had a short in it...blew the fuses for taillights, dash lights, etc. Replaced the fuses and everything is back to normal with the exception on my dash lights (tach, speed, gas gauge), glove box light, ash tray light, and cigarette lighter illumination. Main problem is that I cannot see how fast I am going at night.
Certainly not a mechanic by any stretch but would like to try to fix this myself...how big of a task is this? Just had the HVAC light replaced and ended up costing me about $300 all in labor. Any body give me some guidance to get the dash off or should I just take this to Toyota and pay probably $500 for the job? Any suggestions for the Memphis area?
Have you confirmed that your taillights and brake lights are working as expected?
Your interior dash illumination is powered off the taillight circuit. It's a little hard to believe that a surge in this circuit burnt out all the bulbs at once. I'm suspicious that there's still a wiring fault somewhere.
Have you completely removed the trailer wiring associated with the 'incident'?
All lights are back to normal except the dash, glove box light, ash tray light, and cigarette lighter illumination. Talked to a guy that said the filament is so thin on the dash bulbs that a lot of physical or electrical jarring would easily blow them. The trailer wiring (on a friend's actual trailer) was at fault, everything else seems to fine and it pulls my trailer with no issues.
Have purchased some LL lights and am looking to get them installed soon, as well as get the wiring checked behind the dash.
Is the rheostat turned down for the dash lights? The dash lights can be dimmed or brightened or turned off.
The 10 amp tail fuse controls the combination meter lights.

FYI for anyone that takes their dash apart... DO NOT FORGET TO RECONNECT THIS RHEOSTAT! Your interior lights will not work at all. I had a heart attack when this happened to me, then felt like an idiot after.

Dude, you got your head knocked off on the HVAC light replacement. Go punch the mechanic in the mouth.
