Default v6, valve adjustment?

Do I need to get a valve adjustment in my v6 toy 97 model. I see in the manual how to adjust the valves on both the 4 and 6, but my service book does not list when to get them adjusted.

Thanks

I'd say 150K at least they should be checked.

Thanks. I am sure I am asking alot of idiot newbie questions, however search and the manual are little help. I did see a valve lash sticker under the insulation on the hood the other day and kind of concluded the tapping I hear and that ment it has valves that need adjusting.

The factory manual advises checking the valve clearances, at least audibly, every 60,000 miles.

If some of your valve clearances are too loose then you'll hear a tapping / rattling like noise when the engine is idling, warm or cold. But if the noise you are hearing goes away after the engine is fully warmed up then the noise is NOT due to loose valve clearances, but from something else like a leaky exhaust manifold gasket.

Unexplainable engine vibration when idling could also mean some of your valve clearances are too tight. Loose valve clearances cause noise, but not engine vibration.

I have either a rod or lifter click once warmmed up.

Now, when its cold out, driving 25mph I get a whistling noise like the alternator bearing or something, however the noise does not vary with engine rpms. Strange....

I think as soon as I get my refund from my taxes, going to get the dealer to flush the tranny, adjust the valves, then get a local performance electronic shop put in the alarm with remote start and 25-50 hp nitrous shot.

Are the 5VZ's lifters shim-over, shim-under, or shimless?

I have part numbers and sizes for shimless buckets if you want to be rid of the shims. The downside to shimless buckets is increased noise, and that's exactly what you're trying to be rid of.
