1Gen-TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 1995 to 2004 Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "NHTSA gives Tacoma Low Rollover rating", within the 1Gen-Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
News story. The caveat is that NHTSA uses a formula rather than actual testing.

It's funny cause I sometimes drive a little on the crazy side, and I feel my DC is pretty stable in bends when I should have slowed down significantly..... I wonder how the really do test this stuff.... I think my DC is more stable then my Ex Cab i had before.....
Just another case of research vs. practicallity. You can back almost anything up w/ numbers, but it takes common sense & practical info. to back those numbers up.
Review of this site showed 79 reports and complaints, most had to do with the brake TSB, of the 2001 Toyota Tundra. No catastrophic failures. I thought that was high.
Then I looked at the 2001 Chevy Silverado ….. 330.
Ford F-150 ... 377.
Dodge
Hmmmmmm
Kind of an interesting site and lots of information avaiable
maybe i'm just cynical, but somebody at cnn, yahoo, nbc and whoever else caned this report for its newsworthiness needs to be slapped.
yeah, funny the tacoma should be the lowest rated of all the vehicles they tested, given it was the only *truck* in the lot ...
the way the safety board tests and the way cnn (or whoever) presents it to the viewer are completely different. one is relatively scientific, the other is smoke and mirrors.
enjoy your tacomas ...they may not be as "safe" as a low, wide sports car with mega traction control, awd, internal roll cage and an airbag for everything but yer boys, but i'd rather be in a dc taco than an rc 1ton dually (not tested, since not a new vehicle for 03) in a rollover.
I was curious about this after I saw a rolled double cab the other day. It was a rather minor accident (low speed hit on side) but the truck was destroyed from the roll. I wonder if Toyota's love affair with pre-runners make them unnecessarily top-heavy...

doubtful. if anyone knew how to build a prerunner and make it stable (and raceable) it would be toyota.
let's wait until testing is complete on a few other vehicles in its class, not just sports cars and sedans...once a few suvs (not cars with minivan-like bodies) and other light trucks are tested, we can make an accurate estimation of the rollover probability of a tacoma compared to a ford explorer, nissan whatever, ford ranger, etc...
you can roll anything. youd be surprised how slow you can be moving and still roll a family car.
