Exclamation Vibration issue

Hey guy's,
My 03 taco has a vibration, actually kind of a "hum" comeing from the front end. I think its comeing from the passenger side. It's more pronounced at slower speed's, say around 30mph. When it does it, I can put it in 4hi and it quits. I put a 3" lift in it about 4 months ago with the diff drop.
What the heck is that?

I am having the same problem. About 20 seconds after I start driving i start to get a loud humming sound (kinda of a rur, rur, rur sound) coming from the front of the truck. I put it in 4H and it goes away. Put it back in 2H and it's even louder. Problem goes away around 35 mph. I've swapped tires, lubed the entire drivetrain, did the brakes (needed them anyway) and nothing has worked. I took the truck to the dealer almost 3 years ago when I first heard the problem but they found nothing. I'm taking it back in a couple of days. hopefully they can find the problem. I'm thinking wheel bearings

I am thinking wheel bearings. I has both mine replaced. One thing to do is when going down a road at about 30 mph and hearing the noise turn sharply right and then try turning sharply to the left. See if the noise changes. mine did and it was the wheel bearings Good luck

Guys, check out this thread. I had the front diff replaced and that solved the problem for me. They suspect it was a bad bearing inside the diff.

Humming sound - UPDATE - need your thoughts!

Mine still does it, especially when the truck is cold. After it warms up it seems to stop, or I can slip it into 4hi for just a second or two and it quits.
I don't think its hurting anything anyway so I don't worry about it anymore, I've kinda learned to live with it.
I did do some checking, with the diff. wheel bearings, brakes, and cv's and all is just fine. Pretty sure it's just the new angle of the cv joints, and after they rotate a bit and warm up it quits.

Guys It's been really cold here in chicago the last couple of weeks so my noise has been very loud. people outside the truck can hear it. anyway I took it to the dealer on tuesday. The fix is so simply I feel like an idiot. After talking with a long time (started for toyota in 1981) mechanic he said that the fluid in the front diff doesn't lube well when cold because of poor passages etc and there is some brass bearing in the front that the fluid doesn't get to until it warms enough to flow. Toyota knows of the problem and has a synthetic fluid to fix the problem. At first I was mad. Thought i was getting the run around again and they where trying to charge me for unnecessary service. I was told by the dealer if it doesn't work we'll refund you money for the fluid change. (got it in writing) Mechanic put it on the rack, lifted it and swapped the diff fluid. He did nothing else. I was able to watch the entire service from the waiting room. He put my truck down and drove it away. I paid my bill and left thinking i'd be back as soon as the truck got cold. I left it outside over night. temp was right around 0 degrees. Got in the truck the next morning expecting to hear it noise and it was gone. I could hear it for about 3 or for seconds when I first pulled out then it was completely gone. It's been 5 days and i have not heard a sound. only thing i hear now are the AT tires

Default Re: Vibration issue

hi - my very first post - sorry this won't be much help, I have a similar problem. Very bad vibration when braking (have brand new rotors, pads, tires, rims) The other set of rims and tires had the same vibration as the new ones. On the hwy, it vibrates when coasting and at different rpm's (between 60-70 MPH). The rotors and pads that were changed out looked like new. (will keep them for next time). The steering rack (shaft that goes across from tire to tire) turns when the tires are being turned (truck not moving). Is it supposed to do that? it's an 01, 4 door tacoma V6 auto with a bit of a lift. My first one was a 90 extended cab, brought back from the grave numerous times.. I like the new one but this is not good.

Thanks for any ideas. stephi

I have an '02 with the same problem but I bought it used and I am past the warranty period. They will not do anything to fix it unless I actually break it within the next 3 months. Does anyone think the vibration could be fixed by rebuilding the diff instead of replacing the entire assembly? Has anyone actually figured out exactly what is causing this common vibration? Replacing the entire thing is freakin expensive.
