Question Communication error with OBDII Scanner

I have a 99 Taco SR5 w/ 2.4l 4 cyl. My CEL came on and stayed on (no blinking), I took my truck to a shop for some other work (trans & diff fluid change/ new shocks). They plugged in a scanner to the OBDII (for free) and it came back with a communication error. I changed the plugs & wires and cleaned my K&N filter. It went off and came back on a few days later. I went to autozone and they could not connect to it either. It has been several weeks now and it as been going on & off. Anyone ever seen this kind of problem before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Only suggestion I can think of is to disconnect the battery for about 30 min. to reset the computer. Then try it.

The shop may have the wrong OBD2 protocol selected in the scantool.

Cool Re: Communication error with OBDII Scanner

I finally broke down & went to the dealership. I talked with one of the techs there & he hooked up a scanner to it fro free. Turns out it is throwing a P0401. I guess there are a few different scanners out there that don't use whatever protocol that tacos use. Thanks for all the suggestions
