I just got finished dancing around my driveway like an idiot. I fixed that super annoying drivers seat rock. I know many people have this problem and will let everyone know how I did it.
After studying the rock for a while, I decided that I could apply some simple engineering skills and eliminate the problem. I figured if I could add a little bit of preload (via torsion) on the seat frame, then wherever the rock was taking place, it would stop. It worked.
I used some washers like these
Remove these covers on the rear of the seat (they just pull off) and remove the bolts that hold the seat down (2x 14mm).
I stacked the washers under the drivers side of the seat mount, between the foot and the floor of the truck. After trying two, then three washers, I still had a little movement. Four did the trick. The seat is rock solid! The added height on the drivers side twists the seat frame just enough to stop the rock.
I do have a few things to address though. I am going to Lowe's to get a longer bolt because the washers reduce the amount of threads that go in to the hole. Also, I am going to try and mill a little spacer as thick as the washers and the same surface area of the foot to spread out the load. Although I am confident that the seat is secure, it'll just be for piece of mind.
I hope this helps everyone who has the infamous '05 seat rock.
As far as I know, and as much as I've searched on the subject, it seems as only 05's are affected. I'm not sure, but I also believe it is only on manual seats.
Your fix is a good one but feel that 4 washers will compromise the integrity of the seat in an accident and your idea of a different bolt is going to make you MUCH safer in an accident god forbid ya be in one!! I would limit the washers to 2 at the most and make sure you get the proper grade of bolts. I do not know what the proper grade would be, but i would go to my Toyota parts dealer and see if they could not get you a similar bolt! My experience with hardware is mostly with Aircraft hardware and we could not just add and subtract like you are doing because of the jail time we would be facing if something happened to someone because we used improper hardware and all you need is some new bolts and it's a shame Toyota can't fix this issue
Thanks for your observations. I do agree with your concerns on the integrity of the seat in an accident. I am replacing the bolt with a longer one; do you think that a grade-8 would be suffice, or do you think the OEM bolt is stronger than that?
I am also going to make a block to put under the seat foot to eliminate the washers all together. The washers were just to test if my idea would work.
grade 8 would be perfect. i'm not sure but i don't believe factory bolts are grade 8. i was in an accident 8 years ago in a tercel and the seat bolts were sheered right in two. just the back ones though. the fronts were only bent.
Bring the bolt into the Lowes hardware section and check the pitch. The M8 bolts have a 20, 30, 40, 50 pitch, and that makes all the difference. I just swapped my skidplate bolts out because I F'd them from removing too much.
I'm not too sure what the "rock" you are referring too. Have I not experienced it b4 or am I just not noticing it?

my 06 drivers chair does not rock but the passengers side back rest vibrates bad with no one in it even on a good road, as if their are any in NM
Not too sure which bolts to use like i said i would go with a automotive quality bolt myself. maybe no difference but i have a good budy as a parts man at a dealearship and he would allways hook me up with this type of issue? Good luck!!
I believe automotive grade is grade 5. Grade 8 will be more then enough. I would not stress about the safety of putting 4 washers under 1 bolt in the seat as long as the bolt is longer (like you are doing)
heck go with a F911 bolt and be done with it

just brought my truck in for service and mentioned the seat issue and the service manager ordered a whole new seat frame to be installed...hopefully will fix the problem.
