No warranty for me thanks!
Ive had 3 Toyota trucks in the last 15 yrs. 2 needed a new battery, 1 needed new tires, and i believe all 3 had a headlight replaced. = 1,800?
Thats a scam.

Maybe you're lucky? My '03 Seq has been in the shop twice due to VSC/Trac light and Loud noise in the front axle. At 28K, I've just replaced a set of tires due to bad alignment (realigned twice using DJ's specs but apparently the independent shop didn't do a good job, either).
My point is maybe Toyota quality has slipped due to more US parts and assembly? Last year, my wife's friend had to traded her new Camry after 1 year due to consistent problems.
This is my first Toyota after 20 years with trouble-free Nissan. I'm also considering whether I should get the extended service contract. The only thing that is holding me back is the required maintenance that maybe unreasonable and add more to the cost (I don't know what they are).

I just bought my truck and I got the extended warranty. It was $1390.00 for 7 years or 100K. The kicker for me was that if I don't use it than it is full refundable with a $50 fee. I felt like this was the best deal I have heard of in a long time!
When I saw jholman's post about the refundability of the warranty, I immediately checked the terms of mine. Mine is the Toyota Platinum 7yr/100K model, and it's refundable at any point, but prorated as to time. Perhaps yours is from some other company?
For those of you thinking about purchasing the extended warranty, TS Preferred Dealer, Toyota of Greenfield, is offering special pricing for TS members.

If he's from Chapel Hill N.C. he probably got it through South East Toyota. They offered me the same deal. The only thing I didn't like was that it was administered by a third party (JMA or something like that). Sounded like a great deal but was I weary about the "not used" portion and it wasn't explained real well. If you had a problem during the "original 3/36" was that counted as part of the not used portion or did it not apply until after the factory portion. The finance guy sidestepped the whole question very well. Also very unsure of dealing with third party (read Warranty Gold Bankrupt!) and opted for the Factory backed instead for less money.
I purchased my 2001 Limited with 23K miles about 7 months ago. Bought off e-bay, included the Toyota Platinum 7/100,000 mile warranty with 0 deductable. The seller even paid the $50 transfer fee. I now have 39,000 miles and have not done any maintenance. The seller paid just over $800 for the extended warranty and I feel it is a cheap insurance policy for any vehicle.
Just got the receipt from Troy Dietrich of Toyota of Greenfield for the Platinum 0-7-100 for our 05 Tundra AC 4x2. Price was $875.00 and it was quick service. We spend a lot of time on the road and I've paid $75.00-$100.00 per year for just emergency RV towing/road service in the past. Platinum includes towing/road service and although it doesn't cover our trailer I still think it's a bargain for us. Might mention that our dealer wanted $2,200.00 and when we didn't bite he dropped it by $800.00 because we belong to Costco and then another $200.00 for previous Toyota ownership. We didn't go for any of those because we've gotten internet deals similar to Troy's on previous vehicles. We would not have gotten an extended warranty if Troy's deal had not been available so our dealer didn't lose anything.
I struggled with whether to post this because I know some people may have paid more. I did so to help those still in the market.
I asked alot of questions about the refundable part of my warranty. If I have a problem during the factory warranty 3/36000, it does not cancel the refundability of my extended warranty. My extended does not start until after 36000 miles. My warranty is through Fidelity and the contract is specific about being refundable. You have to call within 30 days after it expires to get the refund.
My tranny went out at 72K miles. Total damage to the wallet, $2900.00. It was the easiest $100.00 I ever spent on a deductible, thank God I bought the $1200.00 extended warranty. Like most of you I was leery of buy it in the first place, but I am more than happy I did so now.
And no, I don't drive my truck hard... and yes, I do the regular maintenance on it.
2000 4x4, 56,000 miles. Wish I would have purchased an extended warranty....I'm disappointed in this truck so far:
1) both exh manifolds cracked and replaced @ 49K mi (dealer grudgingly covered under 5/60 warranty)
2) starter replaced @ 54K mi ($623, not covered)
3) AC/heater blower motor squeal (not covered)
4) Major, annoying drivetrain clunk <Driveshaft slip yoke> (not covered)
5) Rear access cab window latch broke (not covered)
6) Perpetually loose antenna (not covered)
7) Major front brake vibration <shakes the hood> (not covered)
+ a few other crappy little things
$1G on an extended warranty would probably have paid for itself.
Andrew,
The Toyota ESP Extended Service Plan, legally not a warranty, might have paid for the starter and blower motor. What did the driveline slip joint need besides lots of grease? I don't know if the ESP would have paid for the window latch or the antenna...wouldn't LockTite keep the antenna tight? Anyway, the window latch and antenna had TSBs for new-design parts.

I myself purchased the extended Platinum because my wife and I go camping and pull a 24 foot Trailer.I heard the tundra has a week transmission so It was wise to Buy it.Our gross weight is about 10,500 fully loaded.Never know if we might need it.Truck works pretty hard on the steep hills.
The cost of the service plan shouldn't be looked at over the life of the vehicle, but over the life of the vehicle AFTER the factory warranty is up.
If you have a 7 year / 100,000 Toyota Platinum ESP, you are buying 2 years OR 60k miles, whichever comes first. If you get to 5 years BEFORE 60k, the ESP costs you about $600 a year. The real value of the ESP is for high mileage drivers who would void their factory warranty in less than 5 years.
If you drive 20k each year, your factory warranty will be void in 3 years. The 7 year / 100,000 ESP will be void at 100k, which would be reached in 5 years.
The other way to look at the ESP is against the cost of repairs. Purchasing an ESP is betting that you will incur repairs above and beyond the cost of the plan. In the unlikely event that you do need it, Toyota's ESP does provide towing, substitute transporation and travel protection.
I would certainly consider buying one if I was a high mileage driver (which I'm not -- my '98 4Runner has 42k, and it took 13 years to get my LC to 100k) or if I weren't buying a Toyota. There are many, many Toyota's running around with well over 100k on them and no problems whatever.
