The cost of the service plan shouldn't be looked at over the life of the vehicle, but over the life of the vehicle AFTER the factory warranty is up.
The drive train warranty is still 5 years or 60,000 miles , isn't it?
In any case, the extended service plan purchases should be the one that only covers the high cost items, not bumper-to-bumper. You'll pay for all that stuff one way or the other, but you'll pay less if you pay the actual cost, not add profit to the folks selling the plan.

On another note, I have the Platinum Warranty and have found through many dealers that it is pretty much useless unless my engine falls out... I remember hearing something abut being able to sell back the Warranty at a Pro-rated price or something. Anyone have any info on this without me having to talk to a dealer?
Forgive me if this is redundant, but I haven't seen any info on who has the best extended warranties available. I'm getting close to 36k. Also, if anyone has the extended warranty and had to use it, were there any problems?

Toyota Financial's Extra Care Vehicle Service Agreement (VSA). It looks like the Platinum with zero deductable is the way to go. Shop around for the best price...different dealerships can price it as they choose.
That said, I didn't buy one. I'd rather have the money working for me and stick with traditional Toyota quality.

I bought the Platinum extended "inusrance" plan. Their price was half the purchasing dealership's (AutoNation) price and better than my credit union's price with better coverage. The way I read it they cover everything except trim pieces and normal wear and tear. Troy was great to work with and did ALL that he promised to do!!

I have an '02 Tundra that was purchased in July of '02. I also purchased the Platinum warranty that was offered. At 60,000 miles in Feb. of this year, my transmission started to slip. Three days later, the engine light came on. The dealer said to bring it in ASAP. Turns out the transmission pan had metal shavings in it (no idea where they came from). Replaced under warranty, no charge including a rental. Estimated cost....$3,000. I've always had brake problems, just never went to the dealer. After doing some research on the net, went to the dealer last week, told them about a TSB on the brakes, he checked with the warranty people and everything is covered. Truck goes in on the 18th for repairs. I paid $1200 for the warranty (cash). It's paid for itself already. I'll let you know how the brake thing works out. In my opinion, an extended warranty of some kind is well worth the money.
ok, I just got my truck back today. They replaced the entire front brake system. Total estimate......$1674. I had to pay a $50 deductible. So far, $4674 in repairs and I've paid $50 plus the original $1200 for the warranty. I still believe that some type of extended coverage is worth every penny......if for nothing else but peace of mind.
Just curious for those who are saying the cost of the warranty would be refunded if it's never used...was it a Toyota policy or after-market? I've never heard of this before.

I'm pretty sure the refundable ones are only offered thru the dealer. I could be wrong but that's my understanding. That's if you never use it.Some dealers want you to get a third party warranty(that are not toyota policies) so you really gotta watch 'em.
I don't think I'll need it but for $720 it was worth the risk.
I had my 97 4Runner for 7 years and the only thing I did to it was replace the starter and the front pads and rotors. Also tires of course. That is pretty dam good I think. Which is why I stayed with Toyota when I got my 05 Tundra.
I like the idea in 5 years of having a truck paid for with a year of basically bumper to bumper warranty left on it.
My Tundra has a shade over 65K miles on it, when I bought it. The dealer had a "Certified" placard on the drivers' sunvisor, but when I questioned them, they said it wasn't supposed to be there (gotta have less than 65K to be Certified). Anyway, I bought it, and after a month or so, I went to a friend (car business guy) and bought an extended warranty, to cover it until August of this year and up to 118K miles. So far, all it has been needed for was nearly $700 for the new (okay, rebuilt) starter, when the starter solenoid went out. Since you gotta pull the intake manifold to replace it, this is not a cheap fix for a simple problem with a solenoid. So, I'm still a couple hundred in the hole, figuring what I paid for the "policy". The peace of mind is a moot point. My Celica has almost 210K miles, and we just bought a '98 Lexus ES 300 (one owner...my sister/brother in law) with 126K miles. I expect that the Tundra and Lexus will both be in the family for a long time, and with many more miles added to the them. The only reason for selling the Celica is we got the Lexus and the wife says three vehicles is HER limit. With my '69 C-10 "under construction", she read me the riot act. So, the Celica hits the block, this week.

we paid $1200 for the tundra and Avalon together (just when I was about to hit 30,000 mi) I was told it covers everything the rgular warranty covers????
I purchased the 100k/5 year plan for my 01 V8 for about 900 bucks. I was able to talk them down since the Toyota has a "great name and the reputation" to back it up. I also picked up the truck for 700 under dealer invoice, so there was no money made there either.. anyway, at about 70k miles the transmission died... 3500 bucks later... my 900 buck investment paid for itself
It is cheap insurance!!! Don't think just because you have a Toyota it's not worth having. Keep in mind... DONT pay too much for it either!!!
