Re: Poll >>>>> How many of us have extended warranties (and why)?
I also bought the 100,000 extended warranty. I bought because of prior experience with a GM warranty. I would only recommend buying the warranty from the manufacturer. My Buick had the 75,000 warranty. When I reached about 74,000 miles, there were several things that needed attention. I took it to the dealer and he asked that I leave it a few days. When I picked it up, they had done about $4,000 worth of work, almost all of which I did not have any idea was a problem. It's like a blank check for the service department at a dealership.
Re: Poll >>>>> How many of us have extended warranties (and why)?
I didnt with my Toyota but wish I had with my Dodge it failed a lower end at 47,000 miles and needed 2000.00 worth of repair and dodge said to bad even though it was a recorded problem from 15,000 miles. I did have an extended one our 92 Dodge caravan and really needed it oce we hit 90,000 miles it had over 4000,00 worth of work and we paid 100.00 deductable. NO MORE DODGES FOR ME!!
Re: Poll >>>>> How many of us have extended warranties (and why)?
what kind of bs is that you cant get a extended warrenty intill when you buy the truck...i take by your post you have a lease on your tundra that would proberly make since but if its a purchase like what i have you cant get a extended warrenty you have 3 weeks from date of purchase to make that decision i know calif rules on that one my tundra came from california.i too wanted to wait but was told it doesnt happend thus i got mine at my bank 10 years 100.000 miles..

Re: Poll >>>>> How many of us have extended warranties (and why)?
I was really tempted to get the extended waranty from the deal when I bought my truck. I want to say it was $700 - $800 for the 100K. I was to cheap to do it. I was pooling up as much money as I could to get the monthly payment down and that would of jacked up the payment. I also remembered how much of a pain it is to get a dealer to do anything "under" waranty.
Wow, so I finally have my Tundra Limited 4x4, Black/Oak, Off Road, LSD, Guard, Mirror, and Hitch. And to think, when I started looking at Tundras I was going to buy a stripped model. Heh, this always happens. Driving it home was great. The only problem was that it was really slippery out there and brand new tires on slippery uphill roads = rear end moving around a lot even with the LSD. Of course, I didn't really gas it hard so maby I didn't get enough spin to activate the clutches. I'm using the break-in method of keeping the revs below 3K until a few hundred miles, then progressively moving up in rpms all while changing my speed constantly. I keep O/D off generally because I don't want to lug the engine at lower speeds. So, in third gear I'm going from around 2K to 3K rpms back and forth while driving, accelerating normally and then backing off the gas. At stop lights, rpms drop to idle, I put it in neutral and keep them around 1800. This might all be overkill but from what I've found on the net about engine break-in it should be good. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any information about the 'Toyota' Platinum extended warranty? Is it REALLY Toyota's plan or a third party plan? How much should I expect to pay for the 7year/75K plan?
wow.. four miles? Now I'm bummed. I picked up my Black Limited yesterday and it had FIVE miles! I think I'll have to have a "discussion" with somebody in sales or service... or maybe Toyota's general counsel. Anybody got their phone number? haha... I hope you like your truck as much as I like mine.
TundraGuy Your statement of "The only problem was that it was really slippery out there and brand new tires on slippery uphill roads = rear end moving around a lot even with the LSD. Of course, I didn't really gas it hard so maby I didn't get enough spin to activate the clutches." The TRD LSD clutches are always working they have a 400lb preload. (TRD LSD is made by Eaton) Check out http://torquecontrol.eaton.com/prod3....com/prod6.htm This is from Eaton's website "What is the spring pre-load in the standard limited slip differential unit and are upgraded spring pre-load packs available to consumers? The standard spring pre-load for all Eaton Limited Slip Differentials is 400 pounds. We do offer 800 pound spring pre-load packs for high performance vehicle applications." I believe Most LSD (with clutches) work the same way. Even your Hino (SP?) Factory LSD. That's how LSD's work, there always trying to turn both rear wheels. Your tail end will break loose easily on slick surfaces. I.e. Rain, Ice, oil , snow To prevent this just start out slow don't over power the wheels.
Hmm.. I didn't know there was a preload on the LSD. I assumed it was open until the inputs were different enough to cause the viscous fluid to move the clutches. Thanks for the clarification. I was taking it pretty easy, but the roads were unusually slick, it was an uphill, and the tires are brand new.

my truck had 2 miles on it when i got it, in fact it was just unloaded off the truck an hour before i took it. To answer the warranty question. I purchased the Toyota Platinum extended warranty, or service protection plan, what ever you want to call it . I bought the 7yr/100,000 mile, Zero deductable, directly through Toyota Motor Corp, this is underwritten through and by Toyota Motor Corp. Total cost was around $1,200.00 Probably could have gotten it for less if i tried harder but I was using part of the money that was refunded to me from my 7yr/100,000 warranty on the BMW I traded for the truck. That BMW warranty cost $2,700.00 and i only had the car for 6 months so I get most back. So the 1200.00 sounded pretty good at the time and actualy still does. NO REGRETS, id rather be safe then sorry. New Truck, New Design, Peace of mind. Peace of mind can be priceless Enjoy your new truck!
Thanks for the info, I just wanted to know a general good ballpark figure for the Platinum 72month/75K warranty was and it seems that what they are offering me is a decent rate. Although, it is with a $50 deductible...
Thanks again,
Sean

Have you bought a A/C compressor, fuel pump, altenator........ lately? I can assure you there not cheap. Its not just a short block, internal tranny or ring and pinion that these trucks are equipped with that can go wrong between 60 and 100,000 miles. It just gave me an extra piece of mind when I bought mine. 7/100 Toyota Platinum with $50 deductable, was around $1,200. If I NEVER have to use it I will still be happy that I bought it.
