Don't you have to compute that for just the extra 4 years bumper to bumper and 2 yrs on the power train? Does it add anything to the 3-36 and 5-60 during the early years?

I agree totally. I will be buying a 7 year/100,000 Platinum extended service covage with a $0 deductible for $1,185, which doing the math, is $14.10 a month for 7 years.
Kim1500 - where did you get that price?

Thanks!

Charles Maund Toyota offered me the price originally. Champion Toyota met it ... with GM approval.

Well, I guess you could look at it that way. But, as for me, I am not buying a $28K vehicle without buying the extra coverage. Agree with others that its an insurance policy. Just like life insurance, long-term disability, etc. I don't expect to use it, but you just never know.

Additionally, I have owned 2 brand new vehicles in my life (a Ford and a Chevy), and I have always used the extended service coverage. I don't expect the Toyota to be 100% worry free during the 7 years, and the coverage just buys me peace of mind.

Default Extended Insurance?

I bought my extended insurance in 2000 & haven't used it yet at 54000. Will probably never use it I guess. But one thing be aware of, once you buy the insurance you are obligated to perform all the scheduled maintance as required by Toyota like oil changes, rear end fluids, transmission flushes, cooling system anti freeze changes, change plugs at 36 000 etc,. If not they can deny you coverage of your extended insurance. If you look at your policy it clearly states you must follow there maintance schedules & that can be expensive. Anmd when you take your truck back for scheduled service these dealers want to change everything but the WINDSHIELD!!! And if you don't they print on the bottom of your bill that you "DECLINED SERVICE" & that gets them out from fixing your car so beware. Coal Miner in New Jersey.

YES! Because anything mechanical, steel and with moving parts, no matter how relaible or good the quality of worksmanship is will eventually wear, and 4-6 years is usually the time they start. I always purchase extended warranties and have always used them enought o either pay itself off or go beyond what I paid for it making it much more worth it.

I bought a Toyota extended warranty from Toyota of Greenfield and it was very inexpensive, less than half price from what the selling dealer offered. I was happy with the transaction, very easy to do business with too. I tow a 20ft enclosed car trailer on weekends so I thought if I have an auto trans or engine failure - the warranty is much cheaper.

Default Toyota of Greenfield

I just got the 7yr/100,000 miles Platinum warranty from Troy Dietrich at Toyota of Greenfield (MA). Cost was $985 from Troy, but about $1650 for the same plan from my local dealer in Boston. The warranty can be purchased from Troy for any vehicle Toyota (including Lexus models) and be used at any dealer in the US.

Default extended warranty does not cover nuts, bolts and fasteners

My 2001 Sequoia had a loose nut/bolt on the power window motor inside the driver side door and it made noises when the window was rolling up or down. It was about 2 months out of the 3 years factory warranty. I had to pay $91 for Toyota dealer to tighten the nut/bolt because the extended warranty I bought does NOT cover loose bolts, etc.

Just today, Toyota refused to fix the rust and corrosion around the exhaust tip that is too short. My Seq. is 42 months old with 31K miles. Toyota said the 5-year rust warranty only covers body panel and it must be rusted through in order for the warranty to apply.

Now I have to find find and pay somebody to have the rust area fixed before it gets worse.

If I had to do it over again, I'd not buy extended warranty, and I would take the truck in as soon as a problem is discovered before original factory warranty runs out.

I just purchased an '04 4Runner today. The finance manager put alot of pressure on me to buy the extended warranty plan from Toyota. They started at $1775 and talked about all the advantages. I kept nodding but saying "not interested". Finally, I said, "Shoot me your best deal." The price immediately went down to $1508. I listened for a several more minutes and told him, "Not good enough." He again dropped the price to $1400. I told him I appreciated his efforts, but that I wasn't going to commit until I had time to research the pros and cons. He told me that that price was good only for a couple of days, then would go back to the original price.

I'm glad that I didn't commit, as it appears that Toyota of Greenfield has much better prices!! I just emailed Troy for a quote. My opinion is that extended warranties are generally gambles that are not needed. However, in the rare occasion that it is needed it pays for itself in spades.

Good for you. I wish I had the same negotiating skills when I bought my tundra. I was like extended warranty, sign me up. eh I don't regret the warranty just the price. I should look at my warranty again to see what is covered. Anyway, when I bought the Honda Civic, I didn't leave until price was down and apr was below 2%.

One really good negotating tactic is to just say nothing. Listen to the offer, then don't answer. Say, "hmmm," nod your head, then immediately change the subject. Return to the original item and again ask their best price. Say something like, "you'll have to do better than that." When they say, "how much better," don't answer. Say something like, "Surprise me." Never offer to split the difference between their price and your offer. If they offer to split the difference, don't accept, keep it in mind, and try to get them to again split the difference later.

In some cases, the so-called finance manager is not on salary. He gets paid commission on what he can sell and how much he can cheat out of you. One common tactic is for the sales price to magically rise from the agreement you have with the "sales manager" to the time the contract gets printed. Another tactic is to add unexpected, unwanted costs to the lines under the sales price. Some even make errors in the addition that are always in the dealership's favor. Keep your head and check everything.

There are lots of good books and books-on-tape/CD about negotating available at your local library or book store.

Always keep in mind that the so-called extended warranties are not warranties. Think of them as a mechanical failure insurance policy. They do not cover what the original factory warranty covers, nor do they extend the warranty. They are a pre-paid service contract that pays for exactly what is listed in the fine print in the contract...if you follow the requirements in that contract on you for maintenance and retention of paperwork to prove the maintenance.
