Exclamation Accelerator Position Sensor Failure!

Hello,
I love my 2000 Tundra, but today it almost killed me. I stopped for a stop sign and prepared to enter a four lane highway. I had to go left, crossing two lanes of oncoming traffic. When there was an opening, I took my foot off the break and pushed on the gas. The truck crept into the oncoming lanes but would not accelerate. I thought the engine had died, but no, it was idling, it just wouldn’t respond to the accelerator pedal. Fortunately, the oncoming cars stopped before hitting me and I was able idle across and off the road. Whew!. The check engine light was on and the engine continued to idle. I popped the hood to check the accelerator linkage. It was fine. The accelerator cable connects to a spindle up by the intake manifold. I rotated the spindle by hand, but still no acceleration. Wow, I didn’t know I didn’t have a mechanical throttle. Stopping and starting the engine cleared the condition and the accelerator worked again. The check engine light stayed on, and when I pulled the trouble code it was P1121, which points to a failure of the accelerator position sensor. Thank your very much, I learned that the hard way. I’m replacing the position sensor even thought the condition has cleared. You really don’t want to have this experience. Be advised, your sensors are life safety devices.

Ya the TPS is an Input for a whole lot of things. Replacing it should definetly fix it.

You are very lucky not to have been in a serious accident. I'll make a note of this potential risk. I have a 2001 so I don't know if it has the exact same electronics. It looks like Toyota should have had a fail-safe device in the eventuality of this sensor failure. Thanks for the heads up.

Call me old fashioned, but this fly by wire stuff makes me nervous after hearing about this. Makes me appreciate my '64 Impala with mechanical throttle linkage.

Here's the best part.
It will cost me $1300.00 to repair. You can only buy a new throttle body assembly. The part cost $1020.00. Thank you Toyota.

My life is probably worth it though.

I've had that same problem with my 2000 TRD 4x4. The first happended after 40,000 miles and the dealer replaced the Oxygen sensors under warranty. The second happened recently at 75,000 miles and I changed the frong two oxygen sensors myself. The CEL is not off so i'm hoping that corrected the problem. What exactly is the Accelerator Position Sensor and where is it?

This is why I'm not a fan of drive by wire. I'd take a cable linkage any day of the week over it.

Thanks
Pretty low mileage for a TPS to fail, especially on a tundra.
Interesting.......

Default Re: Accelerator Position Sensor Failure!

I thought I had corrected my problem with the O2 sensors but apparently it wasn't the problem. Earlier today while on the freeway I had to hit the breaks hard. When I tried to give it gas again it wouldn't go past idle speed. Once I shut the engine down and restarted the problem cleared and three starts later the CEL light also cleared so I don't know the error code. The last time the same problem happened after I hit the breaks hard. It hard to believe one has something to do with the other but it's driving me crazy. I haven't cleaned the MAF yet so I guess I'll try that next.

Talking Re: Accelerator Position Sensor Failure!

Its known as a T.L.A by Toyota... Throttle Lever Assembly... It is on the Pass side of the butterfly the throttle cable connects to it. It is basically a rheostat.
It is held on with 3 screws and takes about 15 min to change including the battery post terminal removal and install. I posted on this awhile back. It lists at $267.16 but is cheaper then the throttle body change out and is the root of the problem. Toyota Part #22060-50011 for the 2000.
If you tell the parts guy TPS you get the wrong part
Been there done that got the Tee shirt, hat and slippers.
Goodluck,

This essential bit of information should be a Sticky in the Engine & Drivetrain Section. Thanks Azgoldrat.
