Default DIY: TruSpeed Install Guide for 2005 Tundra, 4WD

This TruSpeed (#33002) install was performed on a 2005 Toyota Tundra, Automatic Trans, 4WD, Access Cab model.

***NOTICE: this install is vehicle specific.***

Thank you mustang67408 for your unwavering support.

I mounted the TruSpeed Speed Sensor Calibrator in the glove box, routed the loomed wires through the dash, and connected all of the wiring to the Combination Meter. The install requires some minor technical know-how and no specialty tools other than a solder iron.

Equipment Used:
TruSpeed model#33002 by Superlift
#2 Phillips
10mm socket & wrench
16awg eyelet (for ground wire)
solder iron, solder & flux
wire strippers
needle nose pliers
electrical tape
wire loom, about 3ft.
Manufacturer Instructions

Route all the Truspeed wires through the loom before you start.
Solder one end of the connectors to the designated wires of the TruSpeed unit. This will save you some time later.

Remove the glove box.

Remove the Integration Control Panel.

Route the wired loom through the back of the glove box to just below the radio assembly.
Looks like this:

Remove the Combination Meter.

Turn the combination meter around, looks like this:

***at this point, I disconnected the battery***

Remove the two connectors from the back of the combination meter and put the combination meter aside. You will not need it until you’re done.

POWER
The red TRUSPEED wire goes to a good 12V switched power source. I used PIN 24 on CONNECTOR C12 (on back of combination meter) it is a Black/Orange wire. Just "T" tap into the wire. Here’s what it looks like:

SPEEDO
Now you need connector C11 (back of combination meter),

find pin PIN 24, it is a BROWN/Black wire. Cut this wire approx 3 inches behind the connector.

The GREEN TRUSPEED WIRE goes to the vehicle's wire harness end of the wire you just cut.

The YELLOW TRUSPEED WIRE goes to the dash connector end (to Speedometer).

Solder each wire to the designated connection point and cover with the supplied heat shrink tubing.

Here’s the new sequence your truck's speed sensor now has:
Speedometer --> Yellow Wire --> TruSpeed Module --> Green Wire --> Vehicle Harness

GROUND
The black wire needs to go to a good ground; there is a bolt behind the combination meter, use the eyelet and bolt it to the metal dash support. You can’t miss it.

End Result Wire Diagram looks like this:

Reassemble the Combination Meter, the Integration Panel, and the Glove Box. Installation is complete.

Use the supplied Velcro to attach the TruSpeed unit somewhere in the glove box. Make sure the wire loom doesn’t get snagged by the glove box when you close it. I mounted mine just behind the light.

ADJUSTING THE TruSpeed:
This is all subject to what you’ve done to modify the truck: larger/smaller tires and/or new gearing. You may want to refer to the Manufacturer's Installation Instructions, I've posted them in my gallery, the link is in the Equipment Used list.

I went from the stock TRD tires BFG Rugged Trail 265/70-16 to a larger BFG All-Terrain ko 285/75-16. I reset my TruSpeed by turning it CCW 15 complete turns. Then I tuned the TruSpeed for the new tire size by turning it CW 6 ˝ turns. I crosschecked it using a GPS at 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 mph. The speedo is now calibrated to near perfect.

Install time Start-to-Finish: 80minutes to +120minutes, depending on your technical abilities.

FYI to whoever reads this write-up:
The model# 33002 is for every Toyota out there, the only thing vehicle specific is the wire color patterns behind the tachy

Student's Tundra, did you notice a slight drop in the idle and cruising RPMs after install? I did, feels so much smoother shifting now. I did change my air filter at the same time though...

Nope cant say that I remember a drop in the idle and crusing RPMs but it has been about 2years since the installation. Oh and did think about an install in the glove compartment but decided on underneath the center console instead (easy to get to and consealed )

Does anyone know the location and color code of the wires for the Speed Sense and Reverse on the 2005 tundra D-Cab?
Need ASAP.
Many thanks,\

Web address or wiring diagram would be helpful but location and color will do.

Hey Chris, check out these diagrams. They should be of some help.
The first page shows you the Speed Control diagram. The DC wire looks to be a purple wire with a white tracer.

Tundradrenalin - i like those diagrams. I'm searching for the car speed signal wire myself. Need the reverse and the speed wire to install Avic D3 navigation system. Seems that regardless of what navigation system you install you need these two inputs for the Navigation system.

I've located the reverse wire and confirmed with multimeter. Driver lift kick panel there's a gray plug ...it's the black and white wire that I've poked the black lead from the multi meter http://natalisinc.com/05tundradcabreverselightwire.jpg

I'm still a little confused about the vehicle speed signal wire. I don't see the purple/white wire in the diagram as connected to any speed sensor... I'm not good at reading wiring diagrams. I currently have the instrument cluster and glove box out and for access to the ECU wiring harness. If you or someone could clarify for me which wire to tap into from either location for the speed signal I would appreciate it.

papayasalad2002,
The diagrams I supplied in the previous post were for the combination meter, which is the panel you have the MPH/RPM/Fuel/Temp gauges on.

Here's another diagram for you to browse. Maybe page 338 has your answer.
