Yep, I saw that show also. They took the toothpaste and polished until they came clear. I would try that with a buffer. I guess the effect is much life fine sandpaper but may take less of the finish off.

I used this stuff yesterday, CCP POL-100, got it at Autozone for $11.99 near the auto-body section (not in car washing section). It took a total of 20 minutes including masking the finish and clean-up with no sanding, only polishing. There are 6 polishing pads in the pack and the pad backing. Need a drill and a spray bottle with water. 1 pad for my 1gen Tundra (minor hazing), I did my gf Corolla which had sever hazing and moderate yellowing but they cleared right up. CCP recommends doing them every 20k miles.

I used TURTLE WAX PREMIUM GRADE polishing compound on my 00 TUNDRA - they look alot better - then I put a couple of coats (which I suspect will burn off quickly) of carnuba. Just did this last week for the first time on the little truck; knowing that it wasn't going to make them worse as I've used compound on my 98 volvo truck that has over a million miles on it.
Last fall, I tried some real thick paste for a glass cooktop which did well on my 97 car, and the compound (last week)really brought them back . So I showed it to the other one who used it on the Tundra. Result: happy it nearly matched the recently replaced lens from a crash (Lesson: do not mash your motor when it's raining)
I haven't ever heard anything good about the cheap Chinese replacements - they only look good for a short time.

I use Meguiar's Plast x and a Mother's power ball mini. The lens looks like new in less than 5 minutes per lens.
