LED frontal lighting is just around the corner. Once it becomes the norm, all variants of HID should come down.

I think it will be a while before the LED frontal lighting comes into affect. The only cars that they are really messing with right now are Audi's. I know that you can purchase these aftermarket for Ford, Chevy's, and Dodge, but they are really only being used as "backup lighting". I do agree with you though that once these come into effect, they will reduce teh price of HID's.
The only problem with LED's is that they do not burn hot enough. So, if you live in a town that gets heavy freezes, taking the ice off of the headlights can be very difficult. This is why they do not have LED stoplights up in parts of Canada. It is so cold, that the LED's could not heat off the ice.

I work for an off-road/on-road lighting company and we are going to offer HID conversion kits only for off-road vehicles just b/c the DOT can shut down businesses (walk-in) that offer HID conversion kits that are intended for on-road use(ex.9005, 9006, H4, H3 Kits) in stores. This is the reason why you only see these on-road kits being bought online and if walk-in stores carry them there days could be numbered. Of course you can get around this by ordering HID conv. kits for off-road vehicles that will also fit your truck. The DOT is fighting an up-hill battle on this one and i don't think they will win.

As far as forward facing LED's it is very inefficient to use. (at least with the most current generation of LED) The amount of power the entire unit draws and the amount of usable light it produces does not make sense to use. But they are sure nice as rear facing brake and turn indicators.

I don't think so, but then the company I work for makes the most high powered LED flashlights using new technology. All LAPD officers now carry our LED flashlight and we have more lights coming down the pipeline offering more power.

Pelican™*Products*7060 LED

LED technology is coming to the mainstream and in the future you will see it everywhere replacing all forms of lighting, from light bulbs, to industrial light fixtures, to headlights. The high powered use actually produce a lot of head and require a heat sink since they use driver circuits to power the LED.

I understand using LED in flashlights, but the off/on road concepts we have seen can't throw light 100- 200 yards and make it look like day! What wattage of LED's are need to do so and how many?

I am not saying it is not possible to make LED's work as forward facing lights, its just the experiences we have had have been that is take so many LED's to get even a little usable light. It doesn't make it worth the 18-20 amp draw when HID is 1/4 of that.

Well, better stuff is in the works. We have prototypes that use our current technology and they use 4 high powered LED's and produce a nice spot. When there is time, they are considering putting some on my truck to try out, so I'll have to get a light bar and then test it out in the desert! I think each LED doesn't even draw an amp, but I'm not sure if they kept it that low for the prototype I saw.

that sounds awsome! Post some pics if you get that set-up on your truck

Currently power LED efficiencies place them better than incandescent but not yet at the level of HID. It is just a matter of time though, given the development efforts being put into white LEDs in recent years. No ballast, no significant circuitry needed to drive them.

i put some 6000k hids in my fog lights , and they work great, havent had the time to put in some h4's hids for the headlights , i need to adjust the headlamp or i will be able to flag down a 737...

hids do make a world of difference though, its definitely worth it in my opinion

You need to find out at what distances they took each of those readings. Then compare

Default Re: Who else wants HIDS?

For those who want hids I do not upgrading your stock lights but adding a pair of additional driving lights to your truck and wiring to your hi beams. In California you can legally run two driving lights on you truck with out covers as long as they are wired directly into your hi beams and have no other switch to turn them on/off with. This way you can quickly turn them on and off and not blind oncoming traffic.
As for the Baja Designs Ledgend LED light it is very bright. The color temp is right at 5000k so they produce a very nice soft white light. They also offer a smoother, more evenly dispersed light pattern than a reflector based light. You can also change between patterns by simply swapping different front lens covers. They do draw a little more power than a hid but not much. Current lights only draw 50watts. Eventually LEDs they will as efficient as hids. LED based forward projecting lights are the wave of the future.
