1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "I think my transmission is messing up!", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I think i might have a problem that can become a BIG problem. Well everytime i start up my truck and change the (automatic) gear from park to reverse, theres a jerk in the engine which makes the whole truck jerk. Im pretty sure its something to do with the Trans. Anyone else having this same problem and can help me out? Thanks
Well the thing about that is the way my parking is at my apartments is hard to do reverse parking so i have to reverse every time. But what i did notice today was that i did try going from park to N then to R and it didnt as big of a jerk as it normally does. But still, that doesnt fix the actuall problem of the "jerk". I wonder what it it is
Marty may be on to something. I would try it like he said , you may have a broken motor mount. You may want to have someone put in in reverse while your next to the truck with the hood up. Look to see how much the motor shifts.
__________________ At least they have circled the problem.
are you parking on level ground or an angle? If on an angle it could be a natural occurrence because when you park the truck rolls forward a few inches which puts pressure on the driveshaft, tranny, and diff and will clunk a little comming out of park.
The other thing i would check is the tranny fluid, make sure its not dark or too low.
This test may tell us if it is a bad reverse gear or if the slots for the park are in a bad condition or some other problem. Shut it off in neutral and then try drive.
Here is what I would do. When you go to your sloping parking spot and while the truck is still in gear, and with your foot on the brake pedal, PUSH THE PARKING BRAKE. Then release the brake pedal so that the parking brake is holding the truck. Then put the trans in park. Shut off engine. Then restart the engine with foot on brake pedal and shift into gear.
The shift should be smooth. Release parking brake and off you go!
I'll go on the easy/cheap side here, you might just need to adjust the rear brakes. When's the last time you made sure they're good and tight??
If the rear's are out of adjustment and not contacting the drums enough to prevent them from turning, especially when it's at a higher idle when cold, the truck will try to lurch. The front brakes will stop it from moving but torque will want to push it forward/backwards if the rear brakes aren't stopping this torque. You can search for the proper way to adjust the rear's in the brake section. 3 minutes adjusting the brakes is sure better than a new tranny.
The parking brake will not adjust the rear's properly, you must do it manually, either removing the rubber plugs and adjusting the star wheels or removing the drums. Just make sure you don't over-tighten them.

You can adjust the rear brakes by pushing down on the emergency parking brake. If you are not in the habit of using the parking brake, push down and release it about 30 times and rear brakes will probably adjust.( If star wheel is not stuck)
I'd check the mounts if you feel it jerking, however when it comes to back brakes, make sure your star wheels are freed up. I use my parking brake all the time and my starwheels always seize, i have to get them freed up on every service interval. Good luck!
I concur with Icon. Sounds to me like the rear brakes are not engaging. Hopefully that is the only problem, as suggested by other members the fix is as simple as using your parking brake.
