Just heard back a while ago from "Charles". We discussed the issues, and asked me if I intended on taking it to a dealership for inspection. I told him I would be, as well as my regular garage. He told me to call him back after so he can enter the findings into the complaint.
He also told me that because I have a complaint open, I would be notified if/when a recall was announced on my VIN. Interesting....

Going to be interesting to see how Toy handles this issue. Quietly and do the right thing, or wait until they have a full blown recall demanded by NHTSA.
I wonder how many are in the pool from the snow states?

I was hoping to get more people here to chime in on thier location and if their trucks have much rust they have (see my post How prevelent is frame rust issue on '06 DCs?). I live in San Francisco (no road salt, it's in the air!) and have started looking under every Tundra and Tacoma I see parked (hopefully without getting too many raised eyebrows!). I just looked under a Tacoma last night and the A-arms looked pretty bad. Other vehicles regularly parked on the same street looked a lot better. Guess if I do buy a Tundra, it's going in the garage! I hope my 4Runner will forgive me!
I have a 2001 reg cab and just heard back from the Toyota rep after calling customer service for the second time since Dec. He also asked me if I was going to take it to the dealer and I told him I was not going to pay to have them tell me it is rusted through completely in the crossmember. I can see it myself. He said there was currently no program in place equal to the Tacos, but he did say that his previous job was taking these sort of reports prior to the Taco recall. I took this as a good sign. I already bought a new crossmember and will be installing it and saving the paperwork which he said they would need if a program does start to recall or repair these vehicles. If you have rust issues and have not yet called customer service, do it now. 1-800-331-4331.

Just got back from Toyota of Nashua. The service tech (Richard Martin) took me under the truck and showed me everything that needed to be done. A couple things:
1. My truck's frame is not even bad. Not half as bad as others I have seen. However:
2. Water pump needs to be changed
3. steering rack is almost rotted through and is leaking into the dust boots
4. both e-brake pivots are seized
5. there is an exhaust leak at the y-pipe
6. right side front swaybar link is rotted off, and both left and right need to be replaced
Anyway I look at it, I am paying out some coin.
Also, Richard (he does not like to be called Rich) mentioned to me that I should keep the truck, they will be doing something soon in regards to a recall. He says they are inspecting trucks right now that he has been able to stick his finger through the frame. All things concidered, I feel pretty luck that is not the case for mine, yet....

Hi Ron,
Not sure of your plan, but, I would hold out. You cannot sell it as it, and not sure how much coin that will cost. I think Toyota is "filing" the complaints to see how many actually show up out there. Unless they surprise us, they should be making a decision soon.
Toyota cannot let their rep go to hell after all of this work in the truck market
and risk the 2nd Gen. The 2nd Gen is a nice truck and competes very well with the Big 3. Let people out there (non Tundra owners) think the truck will not last or have problems, they will lose their very important sales.
**off Topic Is Rob still there at Nashua?

i need to make that call soon. i already have one hole that i can see looking thru the rear fender well. yes i was pretty disappointed. the truck is fine, the frame isn't so well.

I have a 2000 Tundra and live in a part of PA where they use rust. Last year I had to replace the rear end of the truck because it had, basically, dissolved. The local Toyota dealer said it was weaping fluid through the casing and was junk. This year I took my truck in for an inspection and the mechanic told me that the anti-sway bar had rusted through completely. There was a gap in it. I asked if he could get another one and he said that he could, but that the frame was so rusty it would be impossible to do the repair. He said I should sell the truck.
I want to tell you that I DO wash the truck. I DO power wash the bottom. And I'm NOT out to sue Toyota. But given the $3500 in corrosion-induced repairs, and the fact that I know the truck's days are numbered, I really hope Toyota does the right thing here, and does it fast. Otherwise, it's time to include my truck as a full loss in the depreciation calculations (from $28000 to zero in 10 years).
My 2000 Tacoma was bought new and used for trips to home depot and plowing duties at home.
51000 miles, it failed and I getting a check for 16,900. Should I buy a Tundra?
I have to take my 2000 Tundra to the dealer on Monday to have the driver side horn (it's a frame part, not a "beep beep" part) checked (along with other rust spots). The horn is almost rusted almost entirely off.
After talking to Toyota it sounds like they should be acting soon on this case. I figure the more people that call and the sooner they do so, the sooner they may take action.
If you have a frame rusted 2000-2001 Tundra, please call 1-800-331-4331.
If everyone calls the 1 800 # and passes the word along to every tundra owner to check there frame and create a case toyota will step up.They are all about customer satisfation they don't like bad publicity.
I called Toyota today and got my case number. The rep told me someone else would call and follow up next week (Mon). I went to the dealer last week for my NY state safety inspection and it did pass and I took some pictures while on the lift. After only 65K on the Buffalo NY highways it's a little ruff under there. I first noticed last fall when I had to replace a brake line and a front sway bar link, both because of rust. Then after checking out the posts here I knew there was somthing wrong. I'm not sure if I'll pass next year as the steering rack is looking the worst for ware. I hope Toyota steps up with something as I would buy another truck from them only this time I would negotiate the undercoating and rustproofing that I always thought was a wast of money.
I first wanted to thank everyone on here for leading me in the right direction. My 2000 Tundra with 159K, had rusted through the cross members and all the leaf spring conectors. My frame rails were fine just some surface rust. I did what you all said to do, I called Toyota, they gave me a case manager and opened a complaint. They told me to take it to my dealer (Hulbert Toyota in Epping, NH). I was told they did an estimate on it and found it would cost $5400.00 to replace all the rusted parts. Toyota told me that there was an active investigation into the Tundra rust and they were working them on a case by case basis and will file the repairs under the Taco recall for insurance. Hulbert Toyota gave me a brand new car to use while they had my truck at no cost. Well one month later I have my truck back with a brand new suspension, cross arms and anything that was non inspection passable was replaced with Toyota parts. The entire bill was taken care of by Toyota. Hulbert Toyota was fantastic and kept me in the loop for everything. Again Toyota stated that there is no recall happening because the number of complaints are just not at that level. They are dealing with them on a case by case basis. Hope this helps everyone. From one VERY satisfied Toyota owner.
I can't believe toyota actually replaced those parts for you. Holy Cow. I filed a complaint back in Sept 2008 and all they did was take my name and number down. Never heard from a rep either. So I may have to give them a call again.
I feel alot had to do with the dealer working on my behalf and talking with Toyota. Hulbert Toyota is were I bought the truck and they were hands down fantastic, they have earned my loyalty as long as I drive Toyota. I explained to Toyota that this was my 6th Toyota and that I love the truck. I feel that the whole customer loyalty thing worked in my favor. Hoping to put another 100,000 miles on the truck. I will post pictures after the rain stops her in NH (if ever). Now looking at getting an 08 Highlander for my wife, anyone have any input?
