Just got off the phone with my Toyota case manager. She said at this time there is no Tundra recall and only your warranty would cover the vehicle. She did elude to the fact that sometime in the near future (next few months) they were going to conclude their investigation and make some sort of decision. Anybody reading this sitting on the fence I urge you to call Toyota and open up a case.
A family friend of ours was a victim of the frame rust on her '96 tacoma. Toyota bought the truck back from her for $7500 and it had 250,000 miles on it, how crazy is that! That is why I always be a die hard Toyota fan.

I opened a case with Toyota and filed with NHTSA. Took my truck to a local dealer to inspect. The service consultant advised me not to drive it - that it is unsafe due to frame and suspension rust. The rear hub has rusted through so that it is weaping gear lube. Spare fell off due to rust, but damage is much more serious than that. 2000 Tundra with 126K miles. I appreciate all the posts here. Sure hope Toyota makes this right - for all of us. I live in New Hampshire.
I think everyone who owns a Tundra that has started to rust but is not critical yet should call Toyota and ask them about repainting frame and suspension parts before they get bad. Once rust gets a foothold it can be tough to stop. Who likes crawling under their truck and seeing a rusting out mess? Seems like it will save Toyota a lot of money down the road in frame fixes or outright truck buy backs. Just think of the great PR too as opposed to the bad PR of just letting what sounds like a significant portion the Tundras (at least in road salted states) rust when it could be prevented at an early stage. Ford did it with body repainting of '80s F series trucks, why not Toyota, "reliability" kings?
I called Toyota's customer service number and spoke to very nice woman about buying a 2006 DC but had looked at one that looked pretty bad, and that I had found this thread on Tundra Solutions and was having second thoughts about my purchase. She said that she was well aware of the issue (and Tundra Solutions) and Toyota was figuring out exactly what to do. She couldn't promise that Toyota would repaint the frame if I bought one that was in good structural shape but just starting to show rust, but did offer to open a case with my name and if I did buy one, they would take a look. Hope they mean it!
If Toyota does initiate a recall/buyback on Tundras, I wonder what years they will cover. I was researching into 2005 and later Tacomas to see if they had the rust issue. There were some instances of people who said they had holes through their frames but since their models fell out of the year range for the recall, Toyota was not buying their trucks back.
i literally just bought a 2000 tundra v6 two days ago. I love the truck but am a little concerned about the frame rust (haven't had my mechanic look at it yet). I was wondering if anyone has any advice for me. Am I on my own with Toyota because I'm not the original owner, or does that not matter. Thanks ahead of time.
If I am on my own, does anyone think getting an undercoating is worth it? I live in NJ.
If they handle it like the Tacomas - you are covered for sure. Many 2000s would not be with their original owners - I don't see rationale for not covering current owner.
My local mechanic said people bought Tacomas at auction for resale to Toyota - made a killing.

It depends. How bad is your frame rust? Is it just on the surface or has it started eating into the metal? Get under there and start scrapeing. If you just find that a lot of paint is coming off, but the metal is in good shape, continue to remove the loose stuff. Sand it down if you can, then see if you can make friends with a tech at a Dealership. When dealerships do undercoatings on cars, they are often left with leftovers that they can't use. If you are lucky (Like Me!!!), they will undercoat your truck if you just pay them for their time.
If you have some bad patches, I don't know, maybe you should make friends with a welder
Good Luck.

I sure hope they have a recall soon. I don't think I'll get much for my 2000 tundra if I sold it now. Too bad it only has 46K miles on it, but check out the rust in these photos. I've lived in Mass since 1973 and I've never seen a car/truck rust like this much in just 8 years. I really want to stick with toyota on my next purchase but there not making it an easy decision. Lets hope for that recall.
I'm guessing a dealer that undercoats vehicles is used to doing it when they're new, not already dirty and starting to rust. Does anyone who works at a shop, or had experience with one know If I were to take a used truck to the dealer to undercoat it, are they likely to properly prep everything (clean off road dirt, scrape loose paint, wire brush rust, sand solid paint and solid metal, prime) before they spray undercoating on? Or is a body shop a better bet?
undercoating does not work. properly cleaned, primes and painted works. in the 60's we had (flintstone) cars that weere undercoated when brand new. I had a 66 for 5 years and it looked like new underneath. I did not have it undercoated. there are new coatings that turn rust to paintable surfaces. use these before rust gets your truck. zinc chromate primer is good also. doug
Today the dealer advised me that my 2000 4x4 with 126k miles is "unrepairable" due to undercarriage rust. I've been getting by borrowing a truck as needed from a friend, but need a resolution soon - does anyone know whether a class action has been considered? Would it be appropriate? A nine year old vehicle in normal use shouldn't rust to unrepairable - I didn't launch a boat into salt water (or any water) with it). I didn't plow with it.
i just bought my used 2001 with 50000 miles from a dealership in cleaveland this week. Upon getting it home i was looking at my running board mounts and noticed i got lots of rusty spots too! I got out a hammer and started smacking the frame and it looked like my truck had dandruff. I got some paint and a wire brush and cleaned best i could(ended up with a full dust pan full of faked metal and debri when finished) No holes through the frame yet but now its got me worried! I bought the truck at a toyota dealership and its financed through toyota! Even passed thier "101 point inspection" Not sure if that means it toyota certifed or not but thinking i should call them back or get my own mechanic to check it out.
