My 2003 with over 135K (never garaged) is more or less rust free so far. Every year I power wash it. Spray the rusr spots with rust inhibitor and then undercoat it myself. Of course being a backyard job I am sure I missed many spots. This coming winter will be the 7th for this truck, will see next spring.
Boy, that is excellent news. I have no doubt this Tundra frame issue will be dealt with. Interesting info as to who made the frames; I did not know that. So..... the question that begs to be answered ... was this Dana's fault - or did Toyota spec the frame wrong, thus Toyota's fault? We'll probably never know the answer to that one.
Good news guys. A guy from the US DOT Vehicle Research and Test Center just spent about an hour under my truck taking pictures in my driveway.
He said he was involved with the Tacoma problem a few years ago and the Tundra complaint rate has "now risen to the top of their pile". ... We may see some action soon !!
The time to push has come !
Thanks Kiwi, that is encouraging news. I just got off the phone with Toyota after a couple of days of playing phone tag. I got the exact same scripted response as everyone else -- no program, case by case basis, they are aware, blah blah blah. (Translation = we are SOL for the time being.) At least there seems to be a faint light at the end of the tunnel. I'll be sure to loop in the USDOT-VRTC on my issue when I get home tonight.
Don't be disheartened. After all, what would you expect them to say at this point? Admit fault? Not hardly; not now, anyway. This is progressing well, IMHO. Keep up the pressure, retporting to DOT, etc.
Larry from the NHSTA (whatever the abb. is) and I talked on the phone about my 2000 Tundra today. He was concerned that people have had things fall off their Tundra like the spare tire or the brake lines fail due to rust. Somewhat of a safety hazzard and all. He was asking about the crossmembers above my spare tire and he has seen pictures of those members cracked and falling apart. In his opinion I will not stop my rust from rotting my frame with an undercoating. He said the states from Mass. and down south do not seem to be experiencing rust issues just the salt belt states.
Now on to call Toyota Customer Care.....wish me luck.
I reported my frame rust problem with my 2000 Tundra to Toyota and NHTSA yesterday. In my situation, the passenger stabilizer mount broke off, which may have caused undo stress on the lower ball joint, which broke off going over a railroad track at slow (5 mph) speed. Wheel buckled, CVJ broke and pulled out of the tranny, and the truck was stuck in the middle of active train tracks. Fortunately a repair shop right next to tracks rushed out to pull the truck off the tracks with a tractor, wiping out the engine hood in the process. Two (2) minutes later a train went past...... This really happened.
Does someone have to die to get this addressed??
The statistics speak for themselves. As of yesterday there were 108 reported (to NHTSA) cases of 2000 Tundras with performations due to frame rust.
2000 Ford F150 : 1 reported loss of fuel tank due to rusted straps
2000 Ford F250 : no reports
2000 Chevy 1500 : no reports
2000 checy 2500 : no reports
This is now a serious and unique (to Toyota) safety problem.
Also, by "passenger stablizer mount" do you mean the stabilizer bar mount .... which secures the stablizer bar and a rubber mount? How many miles are on your 2000 Tundra?

sounds like mine the steering rack where it connects to frame was totally rusted out it was a crossmember under the motor part of the frame making it undrivable and unrepairable with replacing frame dealer said not worth it i have been contacted by the nhtsb and have a case open with toyota i got 1200.oo traded for rock warrior tundra hopefully will get something back from toyota loved the truck and the new one too hopes toyota steps up to the plate
We live in upstate New York. Tundra has 160K. Entire drive train is good as new, had nothing but synthetic, would probably go 300k if not for the frame. The stabilizer mount is welded to the frame. No pictures yet, but will post some soon. I've decided to pay the dealer to do an official inspection. You won't believe the rust damage on this frame.
Wow. My '02 Tundra has zero rust. And I am even in a humid climate. The winters here produce lots of ice on the roads which means salt on the undercarriage. Hmmm.
