According the the article. The NHTSA launched a probe into the manufacture dates of 2000 and 2001 models. But I have heard people on here say that they have frames on 2005, 04, 03, and 02 with frame rust issues. I would predict that other model years will be included with this as we go along. There is virtually nothing different between the frame of a 2000 tundra and a 2006 tundra. They were buit with junk......and they performed like junk. All on the account of saving a dime or two with production. Shame on you Toyota.
Any way you can park the truck and drive something else? I agree with you on the safety & confidence/trust issue. Would I have the dealer inspect? If it were me, yes I would. You'd be on record with your concerns, and if there happens to be an immediate impending issue, you would know it. Glad you've already contacted Toyota. Have you reported it to the gov't website?
Unfortunately no. Wife drives our 2003 Subaru (also with about 130K miles) and I need to drive the Tundra, heck I love the Tundra……….I just worry about it letting me down now.
Here’s the thing that pisses me off……….for the past, oh, I don’t know, maybe 15-20 years it was accepted that when you bought a Toyota, you were going to pay a premium compared to similarly equipped vehicles. “Sure a Tacoma is better than a Ranger, but $8K better? “ etc. The justification for that was that the Toyota badge ensured a quality product, one where you could be sure the company made the right decisions along the lines, “Should we cheap out on the switch gear to make it $100 cheaper or stick with the good stuff and assume the consumer will pay for the quality?”
Well folks, this is where I get a little fired up, I paid for the quality, just like I did on my 1998 Tacoma before this. Ironically they both seemed to eventually suffer from exactly what I thought I was paying more to avoid. The great irony of this for me (more irony) is that I paid that premium for this truck used from the dealer in 2002 knowing that once I paid it off I could drive this thing into the ground at 200K+ miles and 15 years……well that is exactly what I think won’t be happening. This is the time period where the value was going to be realized, the 3-5 years after the truck is paid off where you have no payment, just some major and minor service……….not “Holy Hell my frame just snapped 4 miles down a 6’ wide logging road 40 miles from Canada”.
Rant over.
Hey Toyota, step up and help me realize my value and premium now………..
You know, I couldn't have expressed that any better than you did! I too chose Toyota for the reasons you did. We were right -- maybe 15 years ago, that is. Not sure what has happened. I have read that Toyota did not actually manufacture the frames on the Tacoma or Tundra ... but it doesn't matter either way. If they were a subbed out item, Toyota either spec'd them wrong, or failed to inspect the final product.
Huge liablilty here for Toyota. I still maintain the issue will be dealt with as it was with the Tacoma.
I just hope that Toyota treats this like they did the Tacomas. My 1999 Tacoma was bought back by Toyota.......Yes they paid me a good price.....but as the poster above said.....i bought a Toyota b/c of their quality. Some people like myself and others don't mind spending extra money if they know they are going to see it back. Well I took that money they gave me for my Tacoma and I bought a 2002 Tundra. I gave Toyota the benefit of the doubt.......a do over if you will. Now it looks like I'm going to get burned twice. I don't beleive that Tacoma owners should get down on thier knees and thank toyota for the checks they sent........in my opinion...its the least they could do. I have the same feeling for any action that will be taken for Tundra owners......although im a bit concerned if thier is anything left in the bucket for Toyota Coroporation.
I think its a good idea to get it to your dealer,I just brought my 01 in this past Monday,They incouraged me to so they could do a Product Report. Mine wasnt the worst they have seen and mines pretty bad. Also said, Was this process is shaping up alot like the Tacoma issue and it was a couple of months before action was taken I hope so Im gonna have to park mine.

So did they charge you to look at your truck? The Toyota rep told me I should bring mine in but said that I would have to pay to have someone tell me the obvious, that the frame was rusted through. When I got the crossmember out, I literally broke it with my bare hands. That is how badly it was corroded. The side rails are heavily pitted but not rusted through, yet.
Larry
There was no charge for the inspection,I was actually encouraged from someone in the parts dept,I called to get prices to replace the cross members,And he hooked me up with the service manager. I gotta think if Toyota treats this the same as the Tacoma its a good thing for the service depts
I just called and left my info... suppose to have a rep call me tomorrow.... I have an 01 with 75K on it and I never drive it in the winter... I drive my 98 4runner 99% of the time and it has 1% of the rust that the tundra does...
I am also upset as my tundra is paid off and low mileage (for me) and I planned on having this truck basicly forever, as it would be just for hauling and hunting and what not... now based on what toyota might or might not do... I am conserned.... so you guys that had tacomas bought back how much are they giving you???? like enough to buy a different truck??

Larry,The fact that they want to charge you, doesnt say much for (assuming by rep you mean service manager) that manager or the dealership,1st they should want to support there product,2nd how else will Toyota get accurate info for there investigation?Go to another if you have to,But dont give up
apeterson,
My 1999 Tacoma was bought back for $13,000.00. The truck had 185,000 miles on it. They pay you 150% of the KBB value at retail sale. They do count mileage......either way it was like hitting the lottery. I mean I bought the truck seven years ago for less then the check they wrote me. If they handle the Tundras (which I now have, just bought a 2002) like they did the Tacomas.......it will be a nice payday. But i still will be mad at this obvious hiatus in quality control. We all need to get the word out more and more with this......let family, friends, and enemies know who have Tundras in this year range.

I had that conversation when mine was in on Monday,Regarding the Tacoma buy back vs frame replacement and it cost Toyota more to buy back,So my guess it would be in line with the current 01-04 Tacoma recall that I understand as frame replacement and extend the frame warrantee to 15yrs.
I would rather have my frame replaced, and I told Toyota that today when I called. Even if they give me the 1.5 KBB, that is, at best, $15k. I would rather have a paid off truck with a new frame than a truck payment of $400 for the next five years due to their crappy frame quality!

I'd heard about the Taco frame recall. I can't imagine the amount of work involved in replacing an entire FRAME. Call my cynical, but I wouldn't trust a truck that my local dealership replaced the frame on!
Give me one that was built properly in the first place, please...

Guys and Girls,
Please help me with this one. I'm no professional gear head....but i like to think I'm one step up on the avg. joe. How in the world can a frame replacement be cost effective? This makes absolutely no sense to me......everything....and I mean everything would have to be torn off the truck in peices.....???? Can somebody please make sense of this to me. Is there anyone out there who has had or knows someone that has had a frame replaced on a truck or any vehicle for that matter????? This really stumps me. Im justs starting to think about how big of a job that would be.....tires, wheel shackles, cam and bed brakets, engine, cooling system, springs front and rear, transmission.....all would have to be torn off????? no?
