If they replace my frame.....can they replace the horrible warped second set of manifolds? ;-)
I would like to know how they handled the Tacoma recall. Ok so they offer you 1.5x's KBB, which for me isn't worth squat.......$6-7K maybe if I'm lucky.......and I'm only able to put that towards another Toyota? You're kidding me right? Cut me a check for the amount I agree to and I'll buy whatever I want........I don't want a freakin' 60 month payment of $450 because they can't figure out how to make a truck frame.....don't make Toyota's problem my hardship for 5 years. THAT IS WHY I BOUGHT A FRIGGIN TOYOTA. If I wanted a disposable truck I would have bought a Chevy.......
Guys and Girls,
Please help me with this one. I'm no professional gear head....but i like to think I'm one step up on the avg. joe. How in the world can a frame replacement be cost effective? This makes absolutely no sense to me......everything....and I mean everything would have to be torn off the truck in peices.....???? Can somebody please make sense of this to me. Is there anyone out there who has had or knows someone that has had a frame replaced on a truck or any vehicle for that matter????? This really stumps me. Im justs starting to think about how big of a job that would be.....tires, wheel shackles, cam and bed brakets, engine, cooling system, springs front and rear, transmission.....all would have to be torn off????? no?
I've talked to the local Toyota shop about the Tacoma frame swaps, and I believe he told me it's spec'd for 21 hrs. But, they've got a guy they said that can do it in 11 hrs. (I'm not sure if he was bu*sh*ting me or not, I have no idea if this is a valid timeframe to do it all) But, he was questioning how good a job the guy was doing. They have done a lot of them in the past yr there. I work next door to them, and I've seen 4-6 in their shop in some stage of swap-out.

I saw one in progress the other day,yup its a big job,new frame plus new brake lines, not sure of all the specs,But in conversation its about $11,000 to do frame and I guess 1.5 of kbb could be $17,000. I dont remember what the reference was made towards an LT I think,I heard these guys have done upwards of 70+ this year and can do one in couple of days.Heck with all that experience, Ill take that over a payment.
Not exactly definitive action by Toyota, as they still refer to 'preliminary stages' of investigation, but this looks like a possible milestone nonetheless...

Feds probe Toyota Tundras
2000-01 models face inquiry into corrosion, brake, spare tire issues
Larry,The fact that they want to charge you, doesnt say much for (assuming by rep you mean service manager) that manager or the dealership,1st they should want to support there product,2nd how else will Toyota get accurate info for there investigation?Go to another if you have to,But dont give up
Actually it was the corporate rep who said Toyota would not pay. I probably should have asked my local dealer. I kept the crossmember, or what is left of it, so maybe I will take that to show the local guys.
Larry
All,
So far any service manager I have talked to about my 2002 Tundra looks at me like I have 9 heads when I ask about the results of the investigation into the Tundra frame rust issue. They get all annoyed like Im just some clueless idioit. With the exception of one dealership..... I have found that most anyone I talk to at the managment level of the dealerhsips to be quite arrogant and cocky. When i told the service manager at a local Toyota dealership that there was indeed an investigation pending....and that a rep. from corporate had told me so......he got quiet quick....and changed tone. If anyone from Toyota is reading this.....I think I speak for the boards here......we would like some transparency in regaurds to this issue. We would like updates and we would like direct communication. We are the hard working people of this country....we care about the saftey of our families and others on the road.....we made an investment in your company with the purchase of our vehicles. Now its time to appreciate that and to stop all of the denial and the *** covering.
So I just got my call from Toyota…………..in summary:
No program for Tundras
Investigation underway, they have no updates on this investigation all they do is take names and information in case something comes of this
Even if there is a program similar to the Tacoma it would only be offered to folks with actual holes through their frames….which is a little shady, so people just in the advanced stages of potential catastrophic frame failure at highway speeds would have to wait until it is actually an impending catastrophe vs. just a ticking time bomb.
I believe we are starting to see Toyota’s true colors here and they aren’t pretty…………
I let the initial handling of the design flaws in the 2000-2001 Tundras go with just a whimper……the known horrid manifold design, the known brake issues, etc. This however is beginning to become a trend and I believe I paid a premium for what turns out to be a good sized portion of BS about Toyota’s superior quality and I guess I’ll have to suck on that for a while.
In the next year I was considering replacing the Subaru with a RAV 4 V6 and possibly either a newer Tundra or Tacoma…….based on this bunch of horse-crap I’m not sure either will be purchased. Heck for $12K I could score a 2001 F-350 Diesel with 7.3L, get more interior room, better mileage and at least I know the issues they have won’t snap my truck in half on the highway killing me or someone else.
River 19,
I hear you man. I think there is good reason to remain hopeful on this. I don't think they are going to end up buying the trucks back.....but i do think they will do something. I would be happy with them extending the warranty on my 2002 Tundra frame to 14 years.......or even replacing it (which is something that I can't believe can be cost effective.......but others have disputed this with more convincing evidence than I have at my disposal). This is much more than a rusty truck to me. This is starting to feel a little personal. If Toyota does nothing about this.....if they strand me and leave me hanging....if I see too much more shoulder struggling......then that is it. I will never buy another Toyota product again. And i will convince and urge everyone I know to do the same. I will cite my case to them.....and I promosie to cite yours to them.....I will not stop untill I convince others that Toyota is not a company that stands buy their product. It is not a compnay that they want to do business with. I will convince them that they are better off going elsewhere.
Interesting the WCVB is pursuing this still, I’m glad. I really do have mixed emotions about this whole thing. I’m a die hard Toyota truck guy and have advocated for the better part of 6-8 years on other forums ont heir behalf by recommending their products as being superior etc. and now here I am holding the bag for what could be a mistake they are well aware of, again…………I paid for the brakes at 37K miles, I paid for the manifolds the first time as both times I “was out of warranty” (the first time was the 37K mile brake warping……….it’s not like they weren’t warped the month before at 35,999 miles…..***-hats).
I still love the truck, I just wish I trusted it like I did a few months ago……..
I don’t think at my mileage (125K) they will do anything, heck the woman from Toyota today basically told me that, I was SOL.
If they do nothing and I’m in the market for a newer truck in 6-14months, hello Diesel Ford……………like I said at least I know the truck won’t snap in half, it may strand me in the middle of no where, but at least it won’t kill me.
Ironically I’m about to load it up with about 500lbs of cement and lumber tomorrow night and drive 225 miles up to the mountains………..makes me shake my head.
