I got the same problem on my 2000 bed. It's rusting up through the bottom where the braces are. I called Toyota and filed a complaint and had a rep look at it but all they said is that it is out of warranty. Best thing is that people keep filing complaints, I love my Tundra and say what you will abou the BIG3 but my previous truck was a 95 F-150 that I sold a couple years ago that looked unbelievable. I take care of my vehicles in winter and am very dissapointed with all of this.
Unless ya open a complaint with Toyota they will not do a whole lot until enough people complain!! How do ya think the Taco guys got their trucks bought back, i promise you they went thru a long process before Toyota said WE need to do something! If ya want something done ya gotta line up and file complaint with corporate, and from what i saw several of yall are way overdue on doing complaints! i would also do a complaint here also IVOQ - File a Complaint can't hurt anything but i would see what Toyota was going to do before doing the ODI complaint! Anyone call Corporate and ask if their would be a Tundra buyback?
I just stopped in to my local toyota dealership and the service manager took a look at it. He said that if I get it patched then do not file a complaint. If I decide to file a complaint, then don't get it patched. He seemed like a jerk. He didn't seem to concerned about the truck whether or not that its safe to drive. In my personal opinion I'm not going to take any chances by driving around with rusted out frame support bracket.
Anyways, I just got off the phone with toyota customer service and told them about the truck. All they did was take my information down and gave me a case number. At this time, there is nothing that can be done.
I just took the truck into my local mechanic to patch that frame support bracket and check for other places where there are weak spots in the frame. I'll let you know how much the price will be for repair.
I didn't think that toyota would do anything about it anyways.
Wow. That is bad. Not sure how long it will be, but I feel certain that Toyota will have to address this issue on the Tundra. You did the right thing by reporting to Toyota -
I was under my truck last night checking things out and found that my frame is suspect to the rust issue. Seems like the joints are the worst, but the flaky stuff is also on some of the flat surfaces.
Even if the buy back program kicks in I do not want to give up my 00 for anything! So far the rust is surface only and with a wire brush and a sore arm later I can clean most of it up.
What can be done to correct the problem? Can someone suggest a way to control the rust factor...another New England winter ahead!

Nothing too fancy, just better than stock!
Well I got the truck patched for $50. It aint great but its better than before. There is metal behind it to help brace the frame support bracket. My mechanic thinks that my Hillbilly redneck WV muffler shop torched the frame support bracket by accident back in March 08 when they were removing the old exhaust and installing new exhaust. I never thought of that. I figured that it was due to not hosing the frame enough
I spent my Saturday afternoon addressing rust at all the weld joints on the frame including the rear suspension mounts and got great results.
After removing the loose stuff w/ a brush I used POR-15s Metal Ready liquid per the directions, sprayed it on and kept it wet for > 30 minutes. Washed it off w/ the hose and let it dry, leaving a zinc phosphate surface and the rust chemically neutralized. After drying, I spray painted with Krylon semi-flat rust stopper paint.
I'll be cleaning and painting my rear differential housing next, that sucker's nasty.
It looks like new, no more rust and very unlikely it'll return.
I was just talking with my service manager at the local dealership about this today. There are three frame rusted/rotted out Tacomas in the back lot of the dealership. He says this buyback program for just the Tacomas nationwide is costing Toyota Corp. something like 1.8 BILLION $ dollars! He also said part of the problem was the undercoating/paintjob from the frame supplier in California (late nineties-2000), but more so that the Tacoma frame was fully BOXED the entire length of the truck (unlike the Tundra's which are C-Channel from the engine bay rearward), and that there were no weap holes in the boxed frame for water to escape, resulting in rust/rot from the inside out! He also said Toyota is trying to recover financial damages from the bad frame supplier. Guess it all depends on if the test engineers determine if the rotted/rusted frame on the 1st generation Tundras is also a safety issue as with the early Tacomas, or just normal wear and tear type rust common to most vehicles in the Northeast/Midwest.
When I took my 2000 with 54,000 miles to the dealer a Toyota rep came out, took pictures, told our dealers service mananger the truck was unsafe and we could get a rental they'd pay for. He told him "unofficially" that Toyota would be buying it back and someone would contact me directly. The service manager said he had never seen anything like it, that it looked like it was "rusting from the inside out". Seven weeks later after checking with back with Toyota a number of times, I finally got a call from Toyota and they said that the Tundras were not part of Tacoma buyback program and that they would give me $2,000 toward a new Toyota. They did pay for the rental for the time I had it. I have since taken my truck home and sent of some letters of complaint.
is there a # to call? im having the same bed rust issues. I cut out 8 holes but havent patched them yet.
I had the bed patched but it still rusted through at 130K.
Here is the toyota number to file a complaint. Don't expect toyota to do anything anytime soon. All they did for me was taking my information down and gave me a case number. I did however find a replacement bed floor for $750 but that does not includes shipping.
I have looked under my 07 Tundra and noticed welds with rust and front lower shock bolts rusting the silver color is gone, I have never seen that in my 99 f150 when I traded it in.
In Houston there is no winter and I don't drive truck on beach, so future is suspect with rust.
This does bother me due to cost of truck and longevity cause I take care of vehicles AND I bought it to have for over 10 years, so I thought.
What a bunch of crap !!! I cannot believe what I am reading on this thread with photos to support.I thought vehicle rust on cars was a thing of the past !!!Toyota should be really be worried about what this will do to their reputation.I traded in my Tundra in a few years on a new 4Runner and I certainly hope I do not have this problem. This is really serious !!! It just may make me want to look at a Chevy or Ford next time !!!! Our Chevy W/T is a 95 and has no signs of rust at all on the frame !!! My 05 4Runner has more rust on the frame than it does !!!
