Wow...filed complaint already and had frame inspected...no go...Toyota doesn't care about Tundras. I am getting seriously concerned...one of the two tabs that holds the rear end in place is down to HALF its original thickness. I picked at it yesterday and it came apart like a saltine cracker.
The frame on my 1964 Dart, a MA car its whole life, is in MINT condition in comparison. The rust is limited to the frame. Unlike others, the underside of the bed is mint. Only 72k. My Wife is demanding I get rid of it. I have been reluctant to as I the only solution is to trade it in to a Toyota dealer for a song...I doubt anyone else would take it. I'd hate to do it...I otherwise love the truck and had planned to drive the wheels off it...but it looks like they might just come off on their own courtesy of Toyota. My Wife's 03 Matrix, much closer to the ground with 115K miles driven on the same exact roads, is perfect underneath. Toyota customer service is a disgrace. There are more complaints about Tundra's on NHTSA now that Tacos. When I phoned in my complaint I told them I'd be posting there and complaining to the MA Attorney generals office.
I'll be shocked if we don't see one on Tundra soon. Several people here and on edmunds have discussed frame rot issues - including on person from New Hampshire saying his 00 Tundra would not pass inspection due to frame rot.
On my 2000 that I just sold, it was obvious that it would have some issues down the road - especially on rear shock mount towers. And I have been very faithful to wash underneath since I bought it new. This is another ding in Toyota's reputation, I'm afraid.
MAINE HERE:
My OO TRD was purchased in Arizona new, and has been to Florida for two years, and now in New England for four years...
I spent two days under my truck in the fall de-rusting the frame, and painting for the winter with a black rust paint as a precaution to more rust this winter.
When I showed the dealer up here in Auburn Maine he almost snarled at me for bringing it up...ONLY TACOMA's he hissed at me...I wont be back to that dealership for sure!
WE NEED TO BAN TOGETHER and get Toyota's attention on this for sure oif we want some action! I do not want a Buy Back, but some help with preventing more damage would do, or some parts like the replacable shackles, removable joints etc!
Sound off on this issue !

I had the same problem just get it patched. Toyota is not going to do jack chit about. I know that my patch isn't that great but it will hold up for now. The best thing I can hope for is that my truck will be fine after I graduate from college. I'll decide whether or not I'm going to keep the truck. So far 135,000 miles and counting its been pretty decent but I do not expect it the frame or truck bed to make it to 200,000 miles without looking looking like a piece of Swiss Cheese.
The cross member rot is bad enough but I am seriously worried about the rear end failing to take a turn along with the rest of the truck. President's Day this weekend. May look for a new truck but will sure take a beating on this one. I don't know if I even want to look at a new Tundra, but will do so just to see if the dealer will give me a decent trade in. I can't believe that I am now thinking I will be lucky to get 5K for a trade in on a truck that a year ago I would have thought was worth 12K.
Not sure why you are so sure they will value your trade so little. Do your research before you shop .... KBB values - all three - trade, private party, and retail. Also NADA values ... have these printed out & with you when you shop.
I'm confident you will find good new truck deals out there, but just not so sure you should "bend over" on the trade in.
Don't let them try to ram the numbers down your throat .... "we'll trade with you for XXX$". Don't even mention your trade, or say "no trade" when shopping for the new deal. Once you feel you've reached an acceptable price on the new truck, then and only then bring up the trade. And again, ARMED with your printed values.
No need to take a screwin' here. Know what your truck is worth. Don't accept their BS lies about "soft truck market" etc. Consider keeping the truck & selling it yourself. You can win at this game if you educate yourself in advance & don't fall prey to their tactics.
Don't really blame you for getting out now due to the rust issue, though.
Good luck. I've seen some good interest rate & rebate deals advertised. Buyer's market right now.
My 03 AC was purchased (June) in Minot, ND. I had the optional undercarrige sprayed with the anti-rust/noise reduction film/coating. It looks like bed liner spray, but it is thinner/smoother. The truck and I had our way (lots of fun) in Canada, Montana, SD, Wyoming, and Minnisota all during snowy months. At every check-up/maintenace the undercarrige was checked and no sign of rust yet. I am currently in the dry desert climate (NM). I'm not sure if any of the snowy states we visited used salt or a salt mixer for de-icing, but mine is fine. I'LL take some pics and post. Good luck to all in danger...
JJ

retail is falling on a 2000 Tundra asking price now is lower then 10k.. Good luck..
If there are lots of owners having these rust problem, then I believe it is not because of poor maintenace by the owners. Shame on Toyota and it's dealers for turning their back after taking their hard earned money. My first car was a Ford Pinto, Oldsmobille Cutlass Supreme and then I test drive a Toyota Corolla. I never looked back since then. I just wish that they (Toyota) just order their frame in Japan because I know they have better quality control. My 1995 Previa is spotless underneath, no rust and it is made in Japan. My Tundra is 2006 and 18,900 kilometers and it already started rusting. I can't imagine how much rust it is going to have 5 years from now while my 1995 I am sure will still be rust free.

1. Patch it if possible? Just take it to a local mechanic and get an estimate on patching it.
2. go to a couple of junk yards and see if they have any tundras with a cross member that is in decent shape. Have someone cut the rotted out cross member on your tundra and install the better cross member from junkyard.
I thought my truck was bad. Take a look at my neighbors 1996 Chevy 1500 Silverado with only 66,000 miles. He bought it in 2002 with 56,000 miles. He had never washed it or performed any maintenance on it.

This is SCARY I just went thru this chit with my 1998 tacoma wich i loved and would have ran another ten years if it didnt rust out on me...Come on Toyota your supposed to be the best well let me tell you your not even close. Look at Nissans first full sized truck I think it kills my tundra in perfomance and rust protection...
My dad's 04 Titan looks decent. It does have some rust on it especially around the trailer hitch. It has 50K. Though the Factory sprayed in liner is bubbling up. Dad and I both agree that the titan has more squeaks and rattles than his old tundra with 135K that I'm driving.
In January of 09, my mechanic noticed my frame was very rusty. I knew I had some rusting under the bed over the rear axle. The mechanic started hitting a hammer on the reame and actually found a spot where the hammer went right through the frame. My mechanic was aware of the frame recall issue for Tacoma's and advise me to contact my dealer and inquire about Tundra's
I took the truck back to the dealer where the service manager took pictures and alledgedly sent them to Toyota. He told me to contact Cutomer Service and get a case number. After hearig nothing for over four weeks I called Customer Service back and was told there is no recall program for Tundra's
As I drove through the Toyota dealer's lot on Sunday I noted two rusty frames that were probably removed from Tacoma's.
Do we have enough people with similar concerns that would like to start a class action suit against Toyota?
Tundraman 10....I'd probably have to find a new home for my truck if it was rusted that bad. I certainly wasn't aware of the rust problems with Tundras. My '05 is spotless....like new undrneath. Now, my '87 was eaten up with rust...but it still ran good with 250,000 miles on the clock. Good luck with finding a remedy.
Seriously, I'd get rid of it with a quickness......there's really no cure for rust.
