Are there specific years to look at here? Actually I am going to look at an 05 Access Cab 4x4 and I am starting to worry. The main reason for the new truck is the major rusting on my 1995 Pathfinder, however after 14 years.

I havent heard any news of ruston the 04'sand newers so you should be 0kay ! That's 04-06.
I had a Tacoma bought back by Toyota under the frame rust recall and the buy-back is not 150% above the the full purchase price. Toyota is buying the Tacomas that qualify (1995-2000) after an inspection by a national representative at 150% of the Kelly Blue Book excellent value of the truck - regardless of miles or condition.
It would have been nice to get 150% above my purchase price for the truck (purchased at $17,000) but as it was I felt the way it was handled was both responsible and equitable. After 169,000 of some of the most abusive miles I have ever put on a vehicle, a body beat to death, and an interior that stunk from sweaty landscapers and cigarette smoke Toyota handed me a check for $16,110. Show me one time that any of the big three losers have stepped to the plate on an issue like that. I spoke to an attorney (who I cannot name for obvious reasons) who told me that Toyota paid out more than one hundred million dollars to get those Tacomas off the road.
I am astonished and disappointed that Toyota has mishandled or ignored the very clear frame rust problems that some of the earlier Tundra owners are having. It goes completely against what my experience has been with Toyota. I certainly hope that at some point Toyota gets on the ball there. I know that from my personal experience the way Toyota handled my Tacoma rust issue made me a customer for life. That $16k was a small price to pay to insure that every vehicle my wife, my son, and I will buy for the rest of our lives is a Toyota.
I wouldn't say Toyota would be the only car or truck I drive. I have looked at Honda or Infiniti as well. Given the tread going on now with Toyota I tend to think were finding some short cut's Toyota has done in the past and even today. Toyota has has a great reputation but i hate to see them cut it short on poorly made Car's or Truck just comes to show you Don't invest all your stock on Toyota till you see what's on the other side.

I checked out my fathers 05 and it looks great. Its sees the same conditions my 01 does, he lives about an hour form me. His had a little rust starting around where the members are riveted on behind the wheels but otherwise it looked great. They must have changed something between 01 and 05.
Tucson-Florida-New Hampshire-Maine...
Been moving around a bit...and the Tundra Frame is becoming an issue, notices the shock towers and joints...HOPE someone gets the ball going with Toyota on this soon. I know another winter and my favorite ride is going to be in trouble!

A local news station just did a story on the Tundra and the rusting/rotting frames. Check out the video here or read the article here.
Everyone who is having this problem needs to file a complaint with NHTSA and Toyota. File a complaint with NHSTA by clicking here. Then call Toyota at 1-800-331-4331
There is strength in numbers folks, don't let this go! To date, there is only 38 complaints with NHSTA about this issue.
My Tundra is rotting away worse than a 1975 AMC Gremlin!

It's a dam shame but Toyota needs to step to the plate. This topic is just as bad as the Pos brakes they used from the Tacoma from 00-02 and I was one of them owners too.

I filed a NHSTA report and then called Toyota and gave them a report of my concerns with the truck rusting issue. Toyota said they have no recall like for the Tacoma is setup or even started as of yet, we need to have more owners call in and state there complaints they are not upset to hear this as they said this is how they learn what is good or bad about there products.
So go for it what is ten minutes of your time you may get something started that could help thousands.

My 2004 Double cab seems to be immune to this condition EXCEPT for one part which I found out this weekend....the tailgate cable!!!...my buddy sat on the tailgate and the cable SNAPPED!!!
turns out the coating they used to protect the cable did not cover the ends and as such kept the water inside which rusted out the cable and caused failure....going to the dealer this weekend to try and get it replaced under my extended warranty
folks might want to check best you can your cables before loading that ATV, riding lawnmower, crotch rocket etc into your bed....could be disasterous if both happen to snap! any little nick in the rubber/pvc coating will have let water in and kept it in to rust out the cable.
gonna coat the ends of the new cable with some of that self dipping epoxy resin used to coat wrench and plier handles to prevent water infiltration

I have a 2000 Tundra with rust like some of the pictures I have seen in this post. Can I still file a complaint with the NSTA if I am the second owner of my truck? Do you have to be the original owner of the truck in order to be qualified to complain? If not I guess I need to get a 55 gallon drum of rust converter and get started. Thanks.
Everyone keeps mentioning the 2000-2001 as having the issues........it's because they're the oldest. When 2006s get to be 9 years old, the same is probably going to happen. I hope they make somekind of guarantee that covers all years.

It fine if you are the second owner. I am the second owner as well.

I have owned Hondas, Chevys, Fords, a few Dodges, a few Volkswagens, and a Jeep. I have yet to see any of those manufacturers produce a truck that I would consider owning or that would meet my needs for my business. Now if things change in the future then maybe I would consider a different brand but as of this time Toyota is the only one. Somebody correct me if I am wrong but I still have yet to see any other manufacturer out there step to the plate like Toyota did on the Tacoma issue. I do business the old fashioned way - with those who do business the way I want to be treated instead of what may be best for their bottom line or shareholders. Integrity is a waning concept in this day and age. Toyota at least has some whereas others threw it away decades ago.

I was not the first owner of my old Tacoma and Toyota bought it back no questions asked.
