1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Volant Intake Stalling My Truck!!! HELP", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
ok so i waited bout 2 hrs reconnected the battery and fired her up. Bogged down and up a few times comp did some adjustments i figure and it started to smooth out
well i let it run for like 10 min and get in to give it another try and when i hit the gas it just seems to bog it down more. This thing is blowing my mind
I have no clue wtf is going on!!!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh
ill be home in a few weeks from school if you can wait

- LT headers 14.41 @98mph
A REAL truck.
Get rid of that aftermarket intake, they are junk. I had one on my 06 tundra and it ran like crap. It was an AEM BRUTE FORCE intake and all it did was bog the motor and make alot of noise. Also the transmission would shift funny. As soon as I put the stock intake it ran so much better. I felt like I wasted 250.00.
I have the AEM Brute Force CAI on my Vortec Max. I logged my engine data before and after the install. As it turns out they do exactly what they say they do. They bring in ALOT more air. My MAF pressures and CFM were greatly increased. This also meant until I tuned it that I was hitting the PE table at WOT and was way LEAN.
In other words the stock computer could not fully compensate for the newer higher arrival rate of air. It did a fair job but I had to take 3% out of my PE table because of the amount of air that is being given.
After the adjustment the thing runs like a top and I am getting ~ 1.5 - 2MPG better (tune and CAI).
There may be one of two problems here.
#1 -- Too much air for the stock tune to compensate for. However it should have the same effect and make you run LEAN. I never really bogged.. Chances are (not sure) the Tundra is similar to the ECM on the Chevrolets where the Air Fuel ratios are driven off of the input MAF tables. You would need to be able to tune to correct this.
#2 -- At one time within the Chevy community Volant was the Intake to STAY AWAY from. They actually produced a closed box Cold Air system that managed to make LESS horsepower. They later corrected this and they were then known for having one of the better systems. So this could have happened to you too.
The person that says these after markets are junk just did not fully understand what he was getting. If you take the surface area numbers of the conical and often larger aftermarket filters you will see that they are usually a much large square inch of surface for which to bring air in.. Many are also made of durable fabrics that have a better cleaning capability than stock while allowing better flow.
I suppose they could be considered junk if your system can not compensate for this.
All of this leads to better CFMs. If you truck is sensitive to the MAF tables (which I think yours might be) then only a tune will help with that. However after that tune you will be pleasantly surprised (that I am sure of).
Hope this helps.

I went down to the dealership today b/c i need a new o2 sensor put in and asked them about putting on the intake for me. They said they could do it so hopefully ill have it done by next week
If this doesnt work this is going to be the biggest waste of money ever lol
Hey man give a little time drive the truck around for a couple hundred miles so that ecu can compenste for all this extra air your feeding to it it will be fine.
It is not drivable with this thing on like this lol I may be able to go a few hundred miles at like 5mph but if my math is correct that will take 2 years and 6 days
(im not a mathematician)
It has like zero pickup and i dont feel safe driving it on main roads and its my DD so I kind of need it. It does sound sweet in the higher RPM's though ill give it that

I am not familar with your intake but could you have put the MAF sensor in facing backwards? The air has to pass over the sensor in the correct direction.

I like what Unsub just said......I'd also try it a couple of different ways of testing it......without the lid, with out the filter and without both....maybe something is totally resrticting it? (Short Test drives, of course......)
Can you feel the bog just revving the engine in your garage, or does it have to be driven to show up?

hi i don't get it. i have used 4 different air intake's, and or box's. all worked fine.
maybe just maybe ,it isn't the air box at all.
i had a friend that lost he shim, on the senso and he had a issue, maybe thats something to look into.
i don't think i could reverse mine. 2 skrews and only 1 way in to tighten it up.
guee wiz, i surely hope you get this fixed.
tow it to the delaership with the oem box on.
have them work it out. the truck is useless sitiing in your garage.
it might cost a few bucks, but it's easyer than asking here, we can't see it and look at everything.
there is a great guy here a ASE MECH for toyota, ask him, at NO CHARGE!
again good luck.
just my 2 cent's.

I bought the volant intake about a month ago and when installed it runs rough and dies out within 20-30 sec's. I checked all the vacuum hoses and everything seems to be in place. MAF sensor was on as tight as it could possibly go. So this was last month and i got so frustrated with it i just threw it in the garage. Well i want to give it another try and hopefully you all can point me in the right direction on what to do. Do i need to disconnect the battery to let everything reset possibly???? Any help would be great!!
2000 V6 Tundra SR5
Check the home page as there are air intake forums, engine and drivetrain forums etc in which to post which should have some gear heads that might be able to help you.
If it runs correctly without it but not with it sounds like a sensitive truck that does not like Volant's design.
Sure it could be tuned to run with it but "WHY". Unless you have proof that tuning for the intake would not be an additional waste of money.
Might be simple though ,try the other forums.

Im taking it to the dealership tomorrow, I need an 02 sensor replaced anyways. But i can feel it bogging revving it at a standstill as well as while driving. It is pretty significant. It runs fine with the stock intake so towing won't be necessary lol. Thanks guys as soon as I find out what the problem is ill let you all know. I just hate paying money for something that is useless!
oh yeah and there was only one way to put the sensor in, and gorilla i have no idea what the 3rd line in your last post meant or said lol!

Reason: Why not?
hi, 3rd line,
when you put the sensor in the tube. i guess it's a air sensor of some sort. that needs 2 skrews to hold it in place. some of us have a round type some have square. there are shim's or spacers, or seals that go between the senor and the tube. thats what i mean.
if there missing, than i would assume it might not work correctly.
anyway, hope all goes well.
regards,
gorilla
