Default Mirror glass drops off in my hand.

Today I was putting my mirror extensions (TOW-N-See) on my mirrors. I went to put it on the drivers side mirror, and the mirror glass came off in my hand...

Nothing broke, it just looks like the glue let go. Anyone know the best way to fix this? I don't think I'd have much luck with hot glue, it looks like they might have used an epoxy. Is there an easy way to pop this plastic backing off, and pop on a new one?

I don't need the entire mirror assy replaced, just this glass put back on.

Any recommendations on where I might find a replacement?

-Garth

Can you glue it back in ? If so go to a auto body supply store. Get some weather strip adhesive it is good stuff.

I just talked to my neighbor, he's an ex-autobody guy, and he suggested using the glue they use for window glass adhesive from an auto parts store.

If you used 3M's autobody trim adhesive they would never come off again. It is like black industrial contact cement that if the surfaces are clean will never let go of the glass.

If you are going to glue it make sure you use mirror mastic. It's made only for glueing mirror. You can get it at a glass shop. Anything else could eventually eat the back of the mirror. A lot of adhesives have a chemical reaction with the silver/copper on the back of the mirror.

Hmmm, maybe I'll go to a glass repair shop, and see what they recommend for glues. There's one across the street from my office, I'll see if they can glue it back on for me. (vs my buying a huge tube of it for this one instance.)

Yep, Go to a auto glass shop and they can glue it back on for you. No way they are going to charge much if anything to glue the mirror back on.

well, I finally got this mirror fixed.... duct tape was starting to droop... with the heat and all... I called up a local auto glass place, went there, and the guy looked at it, and took a flat razor, and peeled the silicon off the back of the glass, but for the mirrored glaze square section, he had to use a flat chisel, the razor kept trying to cut the glazing.

Once he got that, he got out his handy, dandy tube of off-the-shelf silicone and proceeded to put it on the plastic mirror on the truck side... (there are 4 squiggly indents on this black plastic piece for the adhesive to grab to. and he put a dab in the middle. He took blue masking tape on the top/bottom, and said to be careful shutting the door, till tonite, and then tonite, I can take the tape off.

I asked him if this was a special silicone adhesive, he said no, just clear silicone you can get at your local hw store.

He was surprised my mirror was still in one piece, he said usually he has to order a new one from the dealer when he's done others. He said the previous silicone adhesive just dried out.
