1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Going from 03 to 05 tundra. Diffrences?", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I know this has been writen before and i have search and found most of the difrences the thing i havent found is what every one thinks. Now that i have changed my tranny fluid to no avale of solving the sliping issue i think she has to go down the road. A tranny rebuild is 4 grand and i am still gana have the 4 sp so at least if i stepped up to the 05 or 06 i could get the 5 speed trans and 282 hp. I need opions wether the 05 vvti motor and 5 speed trans is really that much better for everyday use and for towing? I have read the best 1st gen tundras to tow with are the 03 and 04 because the lower gearing. But i have also herd the 5 speed in the 05 and 06 is night and day better than the older 4 speed trans.Any one with any opions and or 1st hand expeince tell me what you think. I am looking at tradeing in the 03 for and 05. I will probly never tow more than 6 quads on the trailer roughly 5k pounds gear and riders. Thanx alot guys.
I've never driven are even rode in the 4 speed but I can tell you that the 05-06 with the five speed will easily handle the load you are planning to put on it.Go for it you won't be disapointed.
difference between 03-04 and 05-06 is extra gear between 1st and 2nd. 3rd and on is same gears (so for towing 5 speed is better since first 2 gears are little, and not too much for motor when its trying to take off with load you trying to tow). I have 06 sequoia, and RPMs on a HWY is same in 5th gear as in my 01 Tundra.

Thats were i heard the biggest towing diffrence was except the 05+ had 3.90 gears and the 00 to 04 came with 4.10 gears. If toyota would have left the 4.10 gears in the 05+ tundra and added the gear betwen 1st and 2nd and spaced the other 2 out to compensate they could of made it a happy medium. Well i am am going to give john at ipt a call on monday and ask him what he thinks would be my best bet as far as an upgrade in trucks to get the 5sp or having the 4sp trans rebuilt with all his quality components.
I know on my old 04 DC 4x4 the 4:10 gears were with the off road package. The 3:90's were non off road packages. I specifically remember that. Dont know if 05-06's were the same.

I know on my old 04 DC 4x4 the 4:10 gears were with the off road package. .
If you are talking about Trd. I know most came with the 3.9. gear. I don't ever remember Toyota offering a 4:10 in any Tundra until the 2007 model year
01ves, I went from an 04 to an 06, but not by choice. My 04' was totaled in an accident so I had to get an 06. Lets just say the 40hp increase between the two isn't very noticeable when towing, and its not any better in gas mileage, but it is faster in normal driving. I'm not a big fan of the 5-speed trans, it seems to get caught in the wrong gear often, and the downshifts are slow (probably because it has to downshift 3 gears instead of 2). I say beat your trans up until it goes and then replace it, a used trans from a junkyard will probably be alot cheaper then the price difference between your truck and an 05.
I too have been think of going from an '03 AC to either an '05 or '06 DC. Is there much difference between the '05/'06? Other than what I read above, is there anything else between the AC and DCs that I should know?
Thanks!
(My son may get the '03 as his first vehicle)
