1Gen-TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2000 to 2006 Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Mark VIII Fan Installed", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I installed a Mark VIII fan into my 01 V8 AC a couple of weeks ago. I used a DCControls FK-50P because I wanted full control of the temp settings. I also installed the 3 color LED they sell on their website and an on/off switch. I made the shroud out of an 1/8" piece of aluminum from a scrap yard. I tried to get the fan between the pulleys and ended up closer to the water pump pulley than I wanted. I could have made a new shroud and shifted it over another inch but decided to leave it and replace the studs in the water pump pulley with bolts to gain a bit of extra room. So far I really like the setup. I can't believe how quiet the truck is now. The morning fan roar is gone and the electric fan runs amazing quiet.
I did see a gain in probably 1 MPG although maybe more, hard to tell with the warmer temps coming around and I'm not sure when and if they have changed to summer gas yet. Before I installed the fan I got a tank with 15.8 mpg and one with 16.8 mpg. After I installed the fan my next two tanks were 17.7 and 18.3.
So far I noticed the fan barely ever runs, but it hasn't been hot outside either. I drive mostly on the highway. If I sit for a while at stop lights it sometimes turns on. When I was driving very slow one day when it was over 80F outside it was running on low for a while. My truck normally runs around 186F (on my Scangauge) and as it gets hotter out and I sit at lights, the temp climbs to around 190/193 where the fan comes on low. Right now I have the fan controller set at the factory setting.
I will update when I eventually tow with it and start needing the AC.
looks like you're blocking a lot of the rad with that aluminum plate.

There is about a half inch of space between the radiator fins and the aluminum shroud. The side/support of the oem radiator extends about a 1/2" past the fins and that is what this shroud and the stock shroud is mounted too.
So you do not lose flow, because the plate doesn't actually block the air flow
