This is a discussion thread titled "DC's Crash Damage up to $10,700.....So Far....", within the 1Gen-Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Not Good......I think I may be approaching the magic "it gets totaled" number
The estimators initial number was about $5300.....he barely looked at it....now with it in the shop and apart.....there is much more damage. Crap. 4 pages of parts and labor stuff....hood, grill, lights, bumper, fender, doors, side of the bed. Even the A/C condenser got bent....And the suspension and frame damage. Besides the "A" arms and spindle, the shock mount (it's a large square chunk on the frame) is no longer square or in line with the frame. Bummer.
Part of me wants it totaled, parts of me want it fixed.....and one little part wants to total it and buy it back and make it a "project"....I must be nuts!

I'd be giving that guy a bad day for sure.
Hope it all works out.
Yup.......he ran off and supposedly now has a felony hit & run, driving with no license, no insurance.....I hope he enjoys his new room mates....in prison. dummazz......
I just found out that my estimator/ adjuster is at a seminar for the rest of the week......I won't have any more info until next week! What a way to run a company.....I don't think I'd recommend Safeco Insurance to anyone.

Hope it's a write-off...it'll never be the same if they fix it.

Re: DC's Crash Damage up to $10,700.....So Far....
dang...if its over 50% of the what the car is worth it should be totaled...at least thats what happened to my last 2 . id would say just let them total it out. if you fix it it will have a salvged title and trust it will nvr be the same like the day it came from factory...
Re: DC's Crash Damage up to $10,700.....So Far....
Man, if it were me I'd tell my insurance F-You if they didn't total it out. As far as the A$$ that hit you all he'll get is a little slap on the hand. With gas the way it is I guarantee more and more people are driving without insurance, which sucks for those of us that actually have it because in the end we'll end up paying higher premiums. Good luck with your truck and if they do total it, make them give you book and then you can go steel one with the way the market is.
Re: DC's Crash Damage up to $10,700.....So Far....
I was reading truckin Last night and there 2008 Crewmax tester sr5 had damages close to $17,800 on being rear ended from a semi. If that was my truck I would total it out ..

Sometimes it is the best thing to do. But insurance companies want to save money. 80% is the magic number in washington state. So if book value is 27,000.00 anything under 21,000 gets fixed. My tacoma came within 600.00 of the magic number. There was no amount of talking or begging that would change his mind.

I feel your pain.
From my own recent personal experience, I've learned that you really dont have much to say in whether its "totaled" or not. Its the Insurance Co's decision. Not yours or the repair shops. It can go both ways....Sometimes they wont total it when you want them to, and sometimes they do when you dont. It sucks, but thats the way it is. About the only exception I've personally heard of is when you know a repair shop adjuster who persoanlly knows your Insurance Co adjuster. Then some strings may be pulled. I even know some Insurance adjusters who told me about situations similar to yours... The Insurance Co OK'd the repairs, but the total ends up exceeding the "Total" value. But by then the Insurance Co cant afford to change their mind. They spend more to fix it than it would have cost to "Total" it. Stupid, but true.
I wish you the best of luck!

Re: DC's Crash Damage up to $10,700.....So Far....
The body shop just called me and said the insurance company said to "fix it"....not total it. I'm kinda surprised but I have to look at it this way.....it is mostly body damage (I hope) and when it's done....it'll be Ok. There's not much more to it than that. I did get a couple of things to go my way....I have a billet grill I have been meaning to put on....so that instead of the stock one is just about enuf to cover the costs of factory parts instead of whatever after market stuff the company wanted to use.....also, I just bought adjustable Billys for the front end...since they got it apart....they will do both shocks....and a couple other little trades.
With any luck it'll still be a good truck when it's done, I'll just have to change my signature here to include "Smashed; 22 April 2008"

Isn't any damage to the frame considered an instant total?

I would also talk to the insurance adjuster about some extra cash for the diminished value of the truck after all is said and done. If I were you I would hope and pray that the body shop is good at what they're doing. I've seen alot of Mckey Mouse work come out of some body shops. The best of luck to you.

The body shop guy says it's no big deal these days.....I hope he's right. There's 4 hours for frame work on the estimate. I think the final check will be when it gets aligned......and if it's WAY OUT of spec or can't be brought into DJ's specs.....who knows what happens then.
This has been really weird.
