Default Painting Emblems??

I cant stand my chrome emblems, and dont want to totally debage my truck. I was first thinking to have them powder coated, but then realized they are only chrome coated plastic (if Im wrong someone please correct me).

So it painting the only option? Has anyone done this before? Does the chrome coat have to be stripped first?

I've done it. No stripping needed. Just rough it up a little. Prime it. Paint it. Clear it. Then replace the mounting tape on the back with some 3M molding tape.

If you strip the chrome, you may lose the smooth/roundness of the surface. So when you look at them, the light never hits the same as when they were original.

I've painted the Toyota grille emblem, the V8 grille piece and a TUNDRA emblem from the 07 truck. All look good in their new sheen.

When you took off the chrome bumper strip were there any holes or marks under it?

just a note for anyone removing emblem's.
try dental floss. it workks great.
than use any type of glue remover.
i use goof off. but make sure you know what your doing with that stuff, please rinse off immmediatly, and than wax .
if you leave any goof off on the paint, it will eat right through your paint/clear coat, etc.
so use it, rinse with soap and water, dry rewash just to make sure you got off all the goof off, than redry, than wax over the area, even if you have to go further than the area you used the goof off on. just to make sure.
also it(goof off) may run down(drip down) , so make sure you get it all off.
otherwise, you will need a paint job.
personally i like chrome on certain vehicles.

some of these doublesided tapes are so strong, it does pull the paint right off. such as you see in someone pictures here.

also when removing emblems chrome, etc. it does leave that make. now that all depends on how long it was installed in place.
good luck,
gorilla

Thats why I used Goo Gone- it doesnt eat paint or clearcoat.

I think you won't have to worry about the fading, since your truck is an '06. Maybe if you debadged a 2002 today, you would have fading. Mine had a slightly darker color under the badge where the SR5 was, but that went away after about a month of summer sun. It really was barely noticable. You had to be like 5 inches from it. I'd recommend some ScratchX or another product that removes scratches, or even some rubbing compound to blend the paint under the emblem to the surrounding area.

Using a hairdryer to heat up the emblems first then slipping dental floss behind it then goo gone works really well. If you car is more than a few years old there will be phantom emblems. When the car is damp in the morning or in the rain you'll be able to see where they were. Other than that you will be the only one to ever notice. The effect also goes away over time as you wash the truck/car. Scratch X also helps speed it up.
